KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – One of the most picturesque courses in the country provides the backdrop for George Mason's first men's golf tournament of the season.
The Patriots open up the 2018-19 campaign with The Invitational at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Mason begins teeing off at noon on Sunday and the three-day, 54-hole tournament runs through Tuesday. It will be played at the challenging and beautiful Ocean Course, which hosted the 2012 PGA Championship and will be the site of the 2021 PGA Championship.
Mason is one of 14 teams competing in the tournament, along with Ole Miss, Maryland, James Madison, SMU, Akron, host College of Charleston, Charleston Southern, Elon, Francis Marion, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, High Point and Western Carolina.
The Patriots will be led by
Jeff Wilson, who has the most experience in a Mason uniform. The junior from Austin, Texas, has played in 17 tournaments over the last two years and tied for 18th at the Atlantic 10 Championship in April to cap off his sophomore season. Sophomore
Florian Blatti, a native of Lausanne, Switzerland, returns as well after playing in two tournaments last year.
Graduate student
Connor Messick is one of three new faces who will be in action this week. The Oak Hill, Va., native, spent the last three seasons at the University of Virginia.
He played in five tournaments and helped the Cavaliers reach a NCAA Regional three straight years. Last month, he qualified and competed in stroke play of the prestigious U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill in California.
Also making their Mason debuts will be freshmen
Sam Jung (Centreville, Va.) and
JP Miller (Windermere, Fla.).
