The Mason Athletics Department is committed to celebrating and fostering diversity & inclusion within its 22 athletic teams and administration. The department is dedicated to ensuring equality, respect and safety for all student-athletes, specifically as it relates to sexual orientation and/or gender identity and gender expression. If you can play, you can play.

In spring 2021, Mason was named one of just 10 Division I athletic departments to post a perfect score of 100 on Athlete Ally's Athletic Equality Index. The department retained its perfect score in 2022. George Mason University also holds a perfect score of five on the Campus Pride Index. That makes George Mason University one of just four Division I schools in the nation to boast a perfect 100 on the AEI and a 5 on the CPI.

LGBTQ+ Resources
The George Mason University Athletic Department and the George Mason University LGBTQ+ Resources office work together throughout the year to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion. In addition to co-sponsoring the annual Mason Pride Game, the two offices also partner to craft policies, programming and safety protections for Mason's LGBTQ+ Students and Student-Athletes.

Mason Athletics partnered with the University LGBTQ+ Resource Office to hold a Safe Zone+ training for athletics staff and student-athletes on August 17, 2023 via Zoom. The department also encourages student-athletes, faculty and staff to take part in additional safe zone trainings offered by the LGBTQ+ Resources Office. These trainings are available throughout the academic year.
