BOSTON – Two of the fastest 800-meter performances in school history highlighted a successful weekend as the George Mason men's and women's track and field teams competed in two meets.
On Saturday at the Scarlet & White Invitational at Boston University,
Ashley Lewis and
Blaine Lacey ran times in the 800 that placed them in the top 10 in the all-time lists at Mason. In the team results, the men and the women both finished fifth at BU. Several Patriots also competed at the Crimson Elite Invitational on Friday at Harvard, with the men finishing seventh and the women placing eighth.
"On a national scale, these were the two highlights," head coach
Andrew Gerard said. "We knew they were (both) primed for big stuff but to really get it at that level was surprising. It charges you up. Some real positive energy through the whole day. We're very pleased. Just a pile of good performances. It was a very successful weekend. We still have some things to put together. As far as coming out with positive momentum and excitement, we're definitely pleased with it."
Lewis, competing in her hometown of Boston, ran a time of 2:06.69 – the second-fastest time in school history and fastest by a Patriot in 21 years – to finish second in the 800-meter run on Saturday. The sophomore finished behind only Connecticut's Susan Aneno (2:05.82). Lewis' time is the fastest in the Atlantic 10 this season and ranks 26th nationally.
Lacey, a junior from Chesapeake, Va., ran a time of 1:48.91 for the sixth-fastest time in program history. He finished eighth on Saturday and fifth among collegiate runners in the race. His time currently ranks 13th nationally and first in the A-10.
Senior
Shelby Garnand stayed undefeated in the pole vault this season, winning in a jump off over freshman teammate
Autumn White on Saturday at BU. Garnand cleared 3.76 meters after both she and White flew over the 3.66 mark. Garnand, a native of Chesapeake, Va., also won the pole vault on Friday at Harvard, clearing 3.90 meters. She has won all five pole vault competitions she has competed in this year.
The Patriots return to action next weekend with the VMI Winter Relays in Lexington, Va., before competing in the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships the following weekend in Kingston, R.I.
