KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. –
Sam Jung ended his first collegiate tournament on quite the tear – and with a top 10 finish.
The George Mason freshman tied for 10th after shooting a 3-under 69 on Monday at The Invitational at The Ocean Course, which was shortened to just two rounds after Hurricane Florence threatens to hit the area. Junior
Jeff Wilson also notched a top 25 finish, tying for 24th, as the Patriots finished 13th as a team at 40-over 616 (313-303).
Jung finished with a two-day total of 2-over 146 (77-69). He moved up 34 spots on Monday thanks to his 3-under 69, which tied for the second-lowest round of the day. After bogeying his first two holes and carding a double bogey on his third, the rookie from Centreville regrouped and played superb golf his last 15 holes.
He began to turn it around with a birdie on his fourth hole of the day and then he dropped two more strokes on his sixth hole – the par-five No. 16 – with an eagle. Four birdies on his back nine, including both par-five holes during the stretch, and consecutive pars to end his day capped off his day as he became the first Patriot this season to card a sub-70 round.
"It feels good. I came back really strong from yesterday's round," Jung said. "Today, I struggled a little bit on the first three holes. But I kept my head in the game. I tried to finish strong and I came back with five birdies and one eagle."
Wilson shot a 2-over 74 for the second consecutive day to finish in a tie for 24th with a 4-over 148 (74-74). Having the most collegiate experience of any current Mason golfer, Wilson played consistent golf on Monday with 14 pars. He collected one birdie and did record three bogeys, including to begin his front nine. But the Austin, Texas, native, regrouped and parred his last seven holes.
Graduate student
Connor Messick (Oak Hill, Va.) tied for 65th with 14-over 158 (81-77). Freshman
JP Miller finished in 75th with a 20-over 164 (81-83) and sophomore
