SALEM, S.C. – A redemptive third round boosted senior
Eric Edwards to a strong finish for the George Mason men's golf team.
Edwards tied for 15th after shooting an even par 72 in the final round of the Clemson Invitational on Saturday at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls Golf and Country Club. Edwards finished the two-day, three-round tournament at 5-over par 221 (70-79-72).
As a team, the Patriots finished 11th, falling back three spots on the final day. For the weekend, Mason shot a 53-over 917 (300-305-312). Boston College won the tournament title at 2-over 866, finishing two shots ahead of host and No. 15 Clemson.
Edwards, playing three hours from his hometown of Salisbury, N.C., bounced back on Saturday after shooting a 7-over 79 on the second of two rounds on Friday. In the third round, he made five birdies, including four on his back nine. His last two holes were especially impressive as he birdied the eighth and ninth hole after a double bogey on hole No. 7.
"I played well (Friday) morning in the first round and just kind of rode that wave today," Edwards said. "I just needed some putts to fall. Didn't putt particularly well but I was able to get a couple to drop. Made a bunch of birdies, which helps, especially with the start I had. I got off to a rocky start (on Saturday with two bogeys) but other than that it was kind of smooth sailing."
Senior
Ellis Messian tied for 45th with a 17-over 233 (79-74-80). Sophomore
Jeff Wilson finished with a 19-over 235 (74-74-87) to tie for 50th. Senior
Brock Kovach tied for 54th with a 21-over 237 (77-78-82).
Sophomore
Davis Soderberg rounded out Mason's five golfers with a 26-over 242 (80-84-78) and shot an encouraging 1-under 35 on his front nine.
The Patriots now turn their attention to the Atlantic 10 Championship on April 27-29 at the Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando.
"We enter every tournament aiming to gain experience that will help us in the growth of our program," assistant coach
Don Kelly said. "Despite the outcome, this is valuable experience for our team playing at a first-class golf tournament among top ranked teams. We'll take the lessons we learned here back to Fairfax and apply them to our advantage as we gear up for the Atlantic 10 Championship in two weeks."
