WESTON, Fla. – After a tough loss to open Atlantic 10 Match Play, the George Mason men's golf team bounced back with an impressive win.
The Patriots split a pair of matches on Monday during the first day of the A-10 Match Play Championship at the Weston Hills Country Club. Mason fell to in-state rival VCU 5 1/2 – 1/2 but responded with a 4-2 victory over Dayton in the afternoon. They'll compete against Revolutionary Rival George Washington on Tuesday in the fifth-place match.
On Monday, Mason senior
Eric Edwards was the only Patriot golfer to not suffer a loss on the day. He halved VCU's Kristian Donaldson before defeating Dayton's Dominic Maricocchi 2&1.
Seniors
Ellis Messian and
Brock Kovach and sophomore
Takahiro Nojima all went 1-1 on the day. Messian defeated Dayton's Jake Gilkison 4&2 after falling to VCU's Alister Balcombe 2-up earlier in the day. Kovach fell 2&1 to VCU's Sachin Kumer before picking up a 1-up victory over Dayton's Caleb Wolters. Nojima won 2&1 against Dayton's Erron Vandemore after suffering a 4&3 loss to VCU's Daniel Stamper.
Sophomores
Jeff Wilson and
Davis Soderberg suffered a pair of losses. Wilson lost to VCU's Osama Khan 2-up and Dayton's Tripp French 2&1. Soderberg fell 2&1 to Alston Newsome of VCU and 1-up to Dayton's Phillip Johnson.
