FAIRFAX, Va. – After resting the distance runners a week ago, George Mason men's and women's track and field coach
Andrew Gerard gave the green light for the second home meet of the season.
Back in action, the Patriots' distance runners didn't disappoint.
The Mason men's and women's teams combined for five victories and 15 top-five finishes in running events 800 meters or more at the Patriot Games Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Field House. Buoyed by the distance events, both Patriot teams easily won the team titles, with the men scoring 223 points and the women collecting 213.
"This was a weekend we kind of pointed at with the middle distance and distance runners," Gerard said. "They continued to make great progress. The 800 (meters), the 1,000, the mile, the 3,000, the 5,000, I think everybody performed where we were and maybe even exceeded our expectations in some cases. I think that was really good. We're kind of on schedule there. Some of the other event groups have been going several weekends in a row. This was going to be a lighter weekend for them… especially for the sprints, jumps and hurdles. Even so, we still got some credible things done there that we were counting on to make progress toward being ready at the A-10s (Atlantic 10 Championships)."
In all, the Patriots won 13 events – eight on the men's side and five by the women.
