FAIRFAX, Va. – After spending all of last season in the regional rankings it comes as no surprise that the George Mason men's cross country team will begin the 2017 campaign ranked.
And the Patriots start with their highest ranking in three years.
On Monday, the Mason men were ranked 11th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) Southeast Regional Cross Country preseason rankings. It marks the Patriots' highest ranking since being ranked ninth in late 2014 and best preseason start since a preseason ranking of 10 in 2013.
The Patriots return 13 letterwinners and five of their top six scorers –
Logan Miller,
Grayson Morgan,
Trent Lancaster,
Luke Sharkey and
Paul Adam – from last year's NCAA Southeast Regional in which they finished 13th out of 29 teams. Mason also placed fourth at the Atlantic 10 Championship for its highest finish since winning the conference title in 2014. Miller, a senior from Chantilly, led the way last year with a 10th place finish to earn all-conference honors.
The Mason men and women's teams begin the season this weekend at the Spider Invitational on Saturday at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Virginia.
