FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's golf team wraps up its fall season by returning to North Carolina for the second time in less than a week.
The Patriots begin the ODU/OBX Collegiate on Sunday at the Kilmarlic Golf Club in Powells Point, North Carolina. Mason returned to campus on Tuesday after tying for fourth at the Phoenix Invitational hosted by Elon in Burlington, North Carolina.
The three-round, 54-hole ODU/OBX Collegiate runs through Tuesday. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. the first two days, with the first tee time at 8 a.m. on Tuesday for the final round.
Eighteen teams are scheduled to participate: Akron, Ball State, Campbell, Delaware, Drake, Drexel, Georgetown, Hartford, Longwood, Manhattan, Marshall, Nebraska Omaha, North Dakota State, host Old Dominion, Saint Francis, Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's and Towson. Mason finished seventh at the tournament last year, with then-juniors
Eric Edwards and
Brock Kovach leading the way by tying for eighth.
The Patriots are coming off their best finish of the fall. They tied for fourth at the Phoenix Invitational with a 3-over 855 (286-286-283). They closed out the tournament with a 1-under 283 (69-69-70-75) in the final round.
Edwards, a native of Salisbury, North Carolina, paced the group with his fourth top three finish as he placed third at 7-under 206 (68-69-69) and was the only golfer in the field to shoot in the 60s all three rounds. On Friday, he was named Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week for the second time this season.
Fellow senior
Ellis Messian tied for 14th for the second top-15 finish of his career. He shot an even-par 213 (71-73-69) and posted a sub-70 round for the first time in his career. Kovach tied for 27th with a 2-over 215 (73-72-70) and ended the tournament with his best round of the season.
