TOWSON, Md. - The Towson baseball team earned its first-ever
sweep of George Mason since joining the CAA as they topped the Patriots, 8-4,
on Sunday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
Joining the CAA in 2004, the Tigers and Patriots have faced
each other in nine conference series including this weekend's matchup. With the
sweep, Towson now leads the conference meetings, 5-4, including winning the
last three.
With the loss the Patriots fell to 11-9 overall and 2-4 in
CAA play, while the Tigers improved to 9-9 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
Mason looked poised to snap a three-game losing streak as
it took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the top of the second and fourth
innings.
With one out in the second inning, Mason junior shortstop
Duncan Satherlie was awarded first base after he was hit by a pitch. After advancing
to second, Satherlie crossed home plate on a hard-hit RBI single by redshirt
sophomore first baseman Anthony Montefusco to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
Senior outfielder Dan Schafferman added to the Mason lead in
the top of the fourth, drilling a first pitch curveball to left field for his
fourth home run of the season to push the Mason advantage to 2-0.
Towson grabbed the lead in the home half of the fourth
inning, bringing in four unearned runs to go up 4-2. With the bases loaded and two outs outfielder
Peter Bowles recorded a sacrifice fly to left, scoring one run and leaving runners
on first and second. A balk by Mason starter A.J. Johnson allowed both base runners
to advance, and then a wild pitch by Johnson allowed a runner to score from
third and tie the game at 2-2. The final Tiger runs of the inning came off of a
bases-clearing two-RBI single up the middle from Zach Fisher.
The Patriots again fell victim to two-out run production
from the Tigers as first baseman Brendan Butler hit a two-RBI home run in the
bottom of the fifth inning, extending the Towson lead to 6-2.
Chipping away at the Towson lead, the Patriots tallied a
lone run in the top of the sixth inning to pull to within three, 6-3. Senior
third baseman Brig Tison was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, Schafferman
singled up the middle and senior designated hitter Zack Helgeson walked to load
the bases for Satherlie who hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Tison from
third base. However, the Mason threat was ended as outfielder Josh Leemhuis
grounded into a double play.
Mason again threatened in the top of the seventh, as Montefusco
and freshman catcher Ray Toto both singled to lead off the inning and put
runners on the corners. Sophomore shortstop Jordan Hill then grounded into a
double play but Montefusco scored from third, cutting the Tiger advantage to
two runs, 6-4.
Responding to the Mason threat, Towson tallied two more runs
in the bottom of the seventh to go up, 8-4 and secure the series sweep.
Montefusco paced the Patriots at the plate, going 3-for-4
with one RBI and one run scored. Schafferman finished the day 2-for-4 with an
RBI and one run scored.
Johnson(1-4) took the loss after working 4.0 innings with
five hits four unearned runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Jake Kalish threw
2.1 innings of relief, giving up three hits, four earned runs and one walk.
Chris O'Grady closed the game, lasting 1.2 innings and allowing just one hit
with four strikeouts.
Butler powered the Towson offense with a 2-for-3, three RBI
performance.
Gonnella (1-1) earned the win, throwing 5.0 innings and
scattering four hits with three earned runs.
The Patriots return to action on Tuesday, hosting Georgetown
in non-conference action at Spuhler Field.
