FAIRFAX, Va. – Another crowded invitational awaits the George Mason men's and track and field teams this weekend.
The Patriots head down the road for the Keydet Invitational hosted by VMI on Friday and Saturday in Lexington, Va. The meet will feature a large contingency of schools, including Virginia, Atlantic 10 rival VCU, William & Mary, Army, UNC-Asheville and High Point.
This is Mason's third straight weekend of competition. The Patriots are coming off a strong showing in a field of more than 25 schools at the Great Dane Classic in Staten Island, N.Y.
"I think we have good momentum from the last couple weekends" Mason head coach
Andrew Gerard said. "They've gone well. The people we have lined up, by and large, have competed well. Not that there hasn't been some hiccups and some people who need to smooth things out. But that is always the ongoing process is continuing to smooth some things out, refine the process, continue to compete at the level they should be competing based on what we see in practice."
Mason will travel more than 50 student-athletes between the men's and women's squads.
After two weeks of competition, some athletes will be rested as Gerard says "now is when the cycle begins to keep them healthy, giving them some training opportunities moving forward."
"You can't compete every, single weekend and expect to stay in one piece and continue with the training that you need to be where you need to be at the end of the season. Mix some people around. Some people will drop down and do some different events… I think we are in a good spot. People have done a good job so far."
