Track & Field Set to Split Weekend at UVA and Navy

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The George Mason track & field teams travel to the University of Virginia this weekend to compete in the Virginia Challenge at Lannigan Field. The meet will feature a strong field of competitors from a variety of programs, including Atlantic 10 rivals George Washington and VCU, along with Virginia Tech, Penn State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, and others. Unattached and amateur athletes will also take part in the competition.

The Patriots will compete across two action-packed days, Friday, April 17 through Saturday, April 18.

Friday's events begin at 9:30 a.m. with the women's hammer throw. Track events get underway at 3:00 p.m. with the women's 100m preliminaries, and the day concludes with the men's 10000m.

Saturday opens with the women's 5000m (Section 2) at 9:30 a.m. Field events begin at 11:45 a.m. with the women's discus. The meet wraps up with the women's and men's 4x400m relays at 4:40 p.m. and 4:50 p.m., respectively.

The George Mason women's track & field team will split competition this weekend, with a small group traveling to Annapolis, Md., for the Navy Spring Invitational on Saturday. The Patriots will compete against athletes from Cornell, Lafayette, Mount St. Mary's, and Navy.

LAST TIME OUT
The Patriots delivered a strong showing at the Duke Invitational, highlighted by Abby Weening's heptathlon win with 5622 points to shatter her previous best. Alex DeRoussel placed second in the 3000m steeplechase (8:57.80), ranking second in the conference. Helena Santacana led the 400m hurdles group with a personal-best 1:00.51 on the women's side, while Davian Burke, Jayden Apenteng, and Joziah Johnson added solid performances for the men. In the field, Kennedy Drish placed second in the pole vault (4.08m), and Kymara Fernandez finished fifth in the triple jump with a personal-best 11.94m. Cameron Portis recorded a personal-best 51.63m in the discus. Kenzie Dillman, Sarah Clark, and Tarek Benlamkaddem each posted personal bests in distance events, while Kaela-Michelle O'Connor added a personal-best in the 100m hurdles (13.87).
