TAMPA – George Mason's
Ashley Lewis and
Sarah Moore will race another day.
Lewis and Moore qualified for the quarterfinals in their respective events on Thursday on the opening day of the NCAA East Preliminary Championships at the University of South Florida. Due to expected inclement weather, the quarterfinals of both events have been moved up to earlier in the day.
Lewis ran the 18th fastest time in the 800-meter dash on Thursday with a time of 2:06.49. The sophomore from Boston, will compete in the quarterfinals at 2:15 p.m. on Friday.
Moore, a junior from Silver Spring, Md., ran a personal-best time of 52.789 in the 400-meter dash. She posted the 20th fastest time of the day to advance to the quarterfinals at 1:15 p.m. on Friday.
In both the 400 and 800, the top three finishes in each of the three quarterfinal heats, along with the next three best times, will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 6-9 in Eugene, Ore.
On the men's side, junior
Rico Gomez ran a season-best time of 46.91 in the 400-meter dash. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native, finished 29th, just outside of the top 24 times to advance to the quarterfinals.
Redshirt junior
Blaine Lacey ran a time of 1:51.26 to finish 43rd in the 800-meter run. The middle distance runner from Chesapeake, Va., was competing in his first NCAA East Preliminary Championship.
In addition to Lewis and Moore, redshirt junior
Trent Lancaster will also be in action on Friday. The distance runner from Sterling, Va., will be making his regional debut in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 8 p.m. The top 12 finishers advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
On Saturday,
John Seals, a junior from Springfield, Va., will compete in the high jump at 2 p.m. Senior
Raeshawn Bishop, from Louisa County, Va., will compete in the triple jump at 3:30 p.m. The top 12 finishers in both events advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
