SALEM, S.C. – The George Mason men's golf team wraps up the regular season with one of the more prestigious tournaments on one of the most demanding courses in the country.
The Patriots begin the three-round Clemson Invitational on Friday at the The Cliffs at Keowee Falls. Originally scheduled for three days, the tournament has been shortened two days to take account inclement weather expected to hit the area on Sunday. The 12 teams in the field will play 36 holes on Friday and 18 holes on Sunday, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on both days.
The Cliffs at Keowee Falls is a par-72 7,103 yard mountain course that was designed by Jack Nicklaus. This is the third year of the tournament as Clemson has won the team title each of the first two years. The Tigers are ranked 15th in the country and are coming off a season in which they qualified for the NCAA Championships.
The field also features three other teams ranked in the top 100 by Golfstat: UNC Wilmington (62), Notre Dame (73) and SMU (86). Boston College, Connecticut Elon, Furman, Navy, Winthrop and Wofford round out the field.
Five golfers will tee off for the Patriots: seniors
Brock Kovach,
Eric Edwards and
Ellis Messian and sophomores
Jeff Wilson and
Davis Soderberg. Mason will be paired with golfers from Elon and Navy for the first two rounds.
The Patriots last played nearly three weeks ago, finishing 12th at the Seahawk Intercollegiate in Wilmington, N.C. This weekend's tournament serves as the final tuneup before the Atlantic 10 Championships at the Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando.
