FAIRFAX, Va. – The conclusion of the indoor track season saw another George Mason distance runner put his name in the record book.
Senior
Nathan Schulte ran the ninth-fastest time in program history as he won the mile at the Mason Last Chance Meet on Sunday at the Field House. The Mason men finished first with 139 points while the women took second with 73 points in a meet that did not feature the entire team.
Schulte, a native of Fairfax, Va., ran a time of 4:06.36 in his first career attempt running the mile during the indoor season. His time, converted to 4:03.26 for track size, is the fastest mark in the Atlantic 10 this season.
"He felt he had a little bit of unfinished business and wanted to take a shot at a good mile," head coach
Andrew Gerard said. "Blaine (Lacey) said he would rabbit him. I thought it went really well. He said he felt real strong. I think it was a great way to cap off the indoor season."
Schulte wrapped up his final indoor season by finishing in the top 10 in the program record books in two events – the mile (4:06.36, ninth) and the 1,000-meter run (2:23.38, sixth). Junior
Blaine Lacey also placed in the top 10 in two events this season – the 800 (1:48.91, sixth) and the 1,000 meters (2:24.57, ninth). Senior
Paul Adam also ran the 10th fastest time in the 3,000-meter run on Sunday as he took second in 8:36.77.
Other notable performances on the men's side on Sunday included freshman
Jaylen Simmons winning the shot put (15.13 meters) and freshman
Ian Christian winning the 400-meter dash (50.70) and taking second in the 200 (22.75). Freshman
Jake Lonsdale also finished second in the 1,000-meter run (2:32.89). Freshman
Devin Rohler placed second in the 800 (1:58.28), freshman
Nick Corbin finished second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.30) and senior
Logan Miller finishing second in the mile (4:10.83).
On the women's side, senior
Shelby Garnand finished first with a jump of 3.70 meters in the pole vault for her sixth victory of the season. Junior
Caitlin Kelly was second in the mile with a time of 5:10.79.
The Patriots now turn their attention to the outdoor season, which begins on March 16-17 with the William & Mary Tribe Open, the VCU Invitational and the Miami Hurricane Invitational.
