WESTON, Fla. – The George Mason men's golf team wrapped up the Atlantic 10 Conference Match Play Championship with a strong performance that was ultimately decided by a tiebreaker.
The Patriots tied rival George Washington 2-2-2 but lost the fifth-place match due to a second tiebreaker on Tuesday at the Weston Hills Golf Club.
Mason and GW each won two matches and two matches were halved. The tiebreaker is the head-to-head of each match starting with match six and working backwards. The sixth match was halved but the Patriots lost the fifth match, which proved to be the deciding tiebreaker.
Senior
Eric Edwards won 1-up over Christian Cichan and Mason sophomore
Jeff Wilson defeated Cliff Thompson by a score of 5&4. Senior
Ellis Messian halved with Vince Palazzolo and sophomore
Takahiro Nojima also halved with Adrian Castagnola. The Colonials' Jack Porcelli edged Mason sophomore
Davis Soderberg 1-up. Patriots senior
Brock Kovach fell to Logan Lowe 5 & 4.
Mason finished the two-day match play tournament with a win over Dayton, a loss to VCU and a tie to George Washington. The Patriots are off the next couple weeks before returning to action on March 12-13 with the University of South Florida Bulls Invitational in Tampa.
