FAIRFAX, Va. – Golf season gets underway this week – and the Patriots won't have to go far.
The George Mason men's golf team hosts the Patriot Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday at Chantilly National Golf and Country Club in Centreville. It is the season-opening tournament for the Patriots, who were supposed to play earlier this month at The Invitational at Kiawah in South Carolina that was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma.
The Patriot Intercollegiate will feature golfers from 18 teams. The field includes Atlantic 10 Conference rivals Saint Joseph's and St. Bonaventure and Big East foes Georgetown, St. John's and Villanova. Teams will play 54 rounds over two days, with 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. A shotgun start begins at 8:30 a.m. on Monday and 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
This marks the sixth straight year the Patriots have hosted a two-day Patriot Intercollegiate but will be the first time at Chantilly National Golf and Country Club. Last year, Mason placed third for its highest team finish since the Patriot Intercollegiate expanded to 54 holes. Then-freshman
Davis Soderberg and then-junior
Brock Kovach tied for 12th to lead the Patriots.
The Patriots return eight lettermen, including five seniors, from a 2016-17 team that put together one of the best seasons in recent memory. Mason won its first team tournament title in four years (the Navy Spring Invitational), posted four top-three finishes and had nine individuals finish in the top 10.
Senior
Eric Edwards set the single-season scoring record with a 71.70 stroke average. The two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection also posted four top-10 finishes. Two of last year's top three scorers on the team, Kovach (74.18) and fellow rising seniorÂ
Ellis Messian (74.37), also return.
