7/24/2017 12:06:00 PM

FAIRFAX, Va. – Eric Edwards scratched a goal off his to-do list last year when he qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship.

Now the George Mason golfer is eying a return trip.

Edwards, a rising senior for the Patriots, will compete in a U.S. Amateur sectional qualifier on Monday at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia. Forty-six golfers will try to qualify for the one bid to the 117th U.S. Amateur Championship on Aug. 14-20 that will be played at two locations – The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., and Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles.

Edwards qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship in 2016, marking the first time in 11 years a Mason golfer still enrolled in school played in the prestigious amateur event. He finished 5-over 145 (73-72) over two days of stroke play and missed the cut for match play at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Edwards has been busy this summer, most recently tying for 13 th at the Carolinas Amateur Championship with a 2-under 286 (68-69-77-72) on July 13-16. A two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection from Salisbury, N.C., he set the single-season scoring record this past year with a stroke average of 71.70.

Shingler qualifies for U.S. Amateur Championship: While Edwards will be trying to qualify for the second straight year, one former Patriot standout has already punched his ticket for the U.S. Amateur.

Mason alum Scott Shingler finished second at a 36-hole qualifier on July 11 in Newport News to lock up one of the three qualifying spots. He finished with a 7-under 133 (67-66) at James River Country Club.

Shingler, a native of Haymarket who graduated from Mason in 1995, sunk six birdies during his first round and then followed it up with two eagles and a birdie during the second round. This will be the 45-year-old's first appearance at the U.S. Amateur Championship.

"I've been trying for a number of years, and I swear I have been one of the alternates seven or eight times," he told VSGA.org. "I feel like I finally got the monkey off my back. It feels great."

Patriot pair competes at Eastern Amateur: Mason teammates Brock Kovach and Davis Soderberg competed at the Eastern Amateur two weeks ago at the Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club in Portsmouth, Va.

Both golfers made the cut to play into the weekend, with Kovach tying for 45th with an even par 280 (71-72-66-71) for the tournament. Soderberg, a rising sophomore, finished 9-over 289 (74-70-72-73) to tie for 71st in the 168-golfer tournament.

Kovach's 4-under 66 on Saturday shot him up the leaderboard and was the third-lowest round of the day. The rising senior sunk five birdies on the day and had just one bogey. On Sunday, he capped off his weekend with a birdie on hole No. 18 to finish the tournament at even-par.

Quartet to play in Jefferson Cup next month: The Patriots will be well represented at the Jefferson Cup in Charlottesville next month.

Rising sophomore Jeff Wilson, Kovach, and Soderberg will tee off in the open division while assistant coach Don Kelly will compete in the senior division. The three-day tournament runs Aug. 11-13 at the Birdwood Golf Course at Boar's Head Inn in Charlottesville.
