FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University's men's volleyball team did not create unnecessary drama for itself this time around and swept Charleston (W.V.) for the second time this season.
After winning the second set by a thumping 25-12 scoreline, Mason's only worrisome period came early in the third set, when Charleston led by two at 10-8. That was resolved with a 7-2 run which put the Patriots back in control until the end of the match.
The win helped Mason (10-11, 3-5 EIVA) continue its perfect record against Charleston (10-13, 0-10 EIVA) with the Patriots now leading the all-time series 5-0 with a 15-0 set differential.
Just like when the two sides met in January, redshirt senior opposite hitter
Jack Wilson was above everyone else in attack on Saturday, contributing 17 kills (.560 hitting) and an ace for the win. Wilson's total kills were one more than Charleston's top four scoring leaders combined. Ryan Santos had team-high five kills (.250 hitting) for the Golden Eagles and had one of the team's two aces in the match.
The Patriots' domination was confirmed by every major statistical category in the box score. However, Mason was once again hard done by its aggressive serve, which produced 11 more service errors than Charleston.
MATCH NOTES
-Mason was a kill away from doubling up the Golden Eagles – 43-22. The Patriots did, however, double up the Golden Eagles in blocks, 4-2, even though the only solo block in the contest went to Charleston's Eugene Stuart.
-Redshirt senior middle blocker
Graham Gresham was the only player in the match who participated in more than one block.
-Sophomore outside hitter
Kyle Barnes (.583 hitting) and freshman outside hitter
Sam Greenslade (.357 hitting) were the Patriots closest to joining Wilson in double digits with eight kills apiece.
-Junior setter
Brian Negron had his sixth 1.000-hitting match this season after going four-for-four on attack.
-In his fourth consecutive start, freshman middle blocker
Bryce Gatling made up for a slow night in attack with career-high two aces, half of Mason's team total.
-Redshirt senior libero
Johnny Gomez once again led Mason in digs with six on the night while Darrin DePellegrini had the Golden Eagles' highest tally with four.
