First start of the season vs NJIT (Feb. 16) which he tallied four kills on seven total attempts (.571) to go along with one solo block and four block assists… Recorded a total six blocks – two solo blocks and four block assists vs Sacred Heart (March 3).. 2017: Worked his way into head coach Jay Hosack’s lineup and started 12 matches as a freshman, including the final nine contests of the season…played a total of 49 sets across 18 matches. Gatling tallied 55 kills (1.12 per set), three assists, and six service aces offensively while hitting 0.233 in his first season at Mason. The Norfolk, Va. native contributed at least one block in all but two matches in which he appeared for a combined 45 blocks and was the second-most productive Patriot on the defensive side of the net with 0.92 blocks per set…15 digs…He hit at least 0.600 in five matches as a rookie, including his first three…exploded with a career-high 13 kills at Harvard (Feb. 11)…hit 1.000 at NJIT six days later. Gatling had three assists, including one in each match against Princeton (Feb. 18 and April 8)…back-to-back career-high six blocks against Cal State Northridge (March 11) and Barton (March 24)…the middle blocker picked up career-high four digs in his debut, at No. 1 and eventual national champion Ohio State (Jan. 10)…finished the season with 84.5 points.
Prep: Bryce Gatling comes to Mason after four years as a standout at Norview High School in his native Norfolk, Va. The middle blocker was named the Pilots' MVP for three consecutive seasons and earned All-Conference 9 honors in each of his four years of varsity volleyball. Outside of school, Gatling accumulated four years of club volleyball experience, representing Coastal Virginia Volleyball Club and Ocean Volleyball Club for two years each.
Personal: Son of former Norfolk State basketball player Alexander Gatling and Renee Barnes and the younger brother of Monique Gatling, who plays volleyball at Norfolk State. Bryce majors in environmental science and minors in geography. In his limited free time, he enjoys graphic design and music making.
