FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team heads north to face a conference opponent its rarely seen.
In fact, Mason and St. Bonaventure are meeting on the soccer field for just the second time. The Patriots play the Bonnies at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Marra Athletics Complex in Olean, New York.
The teams' only previous matchup came on Nov. 10, 2013 – the regular-season finale of Mason's inaugural season in the Atlantic 10. The Patriots defeated St. Bonaventure 2-1 in Olean.
Redshirt senior captain
David Galdo was a freshman then and the only current player to have played against the Bonnies. Volunteer assistant coach Tim Mulgrew was a junior and starting forward for the Patriots.
Mason (5-6-2, 0-4-1 A-10) is looking to snap four-game losing streak. The Patriots are coming off a 4-0 loss to in-state rival VCU at home on Wednesday. The Rams scored all four goals after halftime. Mason senior captain
Henning Dirks leads the Atlantic 10 in goals (eight), assists (seven) and points (23).
St. Bonaventure (5-8-2, 1-4) picked up its first conference win with a 1-0 double-overtime victory at Duquesne on Wednesday. Isaiah Barrett scored less than two minutes into the second overtime to snap the Bonnies' four-game losing streak. Junior Kosi Nwafornso leads St. Bonaventure with four goals.
With just three conference games remaining, the Patriots are in desperate need of a win in order to keep their postseason hopes alive. The top eight teams make the Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship in November. Currently, Mason sits five points behind Saint Louis and LaSalle, which are tied for the eighth spot with six points.
