AKRON, Ohio – The George Mason men's golf team takes a swing at one of the most prestigious clubs in the country.
The Patriots open up play in the Firestone Invitational on Monday on the North Course of the Firestone Country Club. The club hosts the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational every August and has also held three PGA Championships.
The two-day, three-round tournament begins on Monday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Thirty-six holes will be played on Monday with the final round on Tuesday. Sixteen teams are participating: Atlantic 10 foes, Davidson, Dayton and Richmond, host Akron, Bradley, Cincinnati, Furman, Illinois State, Mercer, Ohio, Old Dominion, South Carolina Aiken, Temple, William & Mary and Valparaiso.
Mason finished seventh in its home invitational and season-opening tournament last week – the Patriot Intercollegiate at Chantilly National Golf and Country Club in Centreville, Virginia. Senior
Eric Edwards led the way by tying for sixth with a 1-over 217 (71-72-74) for his eighth career top 10 finish. The Salisbury, N.C., native was named the Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week.
