FAIRFAX, Va. – On a sun splashed day in Fairfax, the host Patriots had a terrific showing at the Mason Spring T&F Invitational, held at George Mason Stadium.
Mason saw a school record fall while combining four four new ECAC/IC4A marks, in addition to four individuals improving upon their previous qualifying times and several PR's and Top 8 placings.
Jennifer Nakamura shattered the school record in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing in seventh place with a time of 11:19.90. The previous mark, 11:27.19, had stood since 2003.
For the women, Shavon Briscoe had the top time in the prelims of the 100m hurdles (13.75), advancing to the finals where she finished second in a time of 13.52. The time was a PR, placed her second all-time in program history and improved upon her previous ECAC qualifying mark.
In a seven-way tie atop the standings in the women's high jump at 1.66m Dominique Graham persevered, winning the event after a multi-round jumpoff.
A fast 400mseeding saw the top three overall finishers all emerge from Heat 12, including two Patriots. Daianna Barron finished second overall with a PR and ECAC time of 54.16, while Cierra McGee followed right behind with a time of 54.21. Also running in the event were Sarah Weber (57.78) and Jasmine Robinson (1:00.90), who finished with PR times.
Also recording an ECAC time was Taylor Wheaton, who finished second in the 400m hurdles in 59.46 and Michelle Wallerstedt, who finished second in the discus with a throw of 45.53m, which was a PR and the fifth-best distance in program history in addition to bettering her previous ECAC mark.
In the 100m, Katea Jemmott advanced to the finals after winning Heat two and finishing sixth with a time of 12.22. She went on to run a PR of 12.14 in the finals, placing her in eighth. A trio of Patriots competed in the 200m, with McGee winning Heat 12 and finishing third overall in a time of 23.89, while Crystalyne Clark finishing 13th in 24.91, and Sarah Weber winning Heat 6 and placing 26th overall after crossing the finish line in 25.45.
On the men's side, David Verburg won the 200m in a time of 21.00, but did not improve upon his previous IC4A mark. Anthony Williams advanced to the finals of the 110m hurdles with the sixth-fastest prelim time (14.55) before finishing fifth in a time of 14.22, a PR and improvement on his previous IC4A qualifying mark.
Also qualifying for the IC4A championships was Bryon Sintim, Jimi Tele in the field and Adrian Vaughn and Michael Conway on the track. Sintim finished second in the long jump with a PR distance of 7.13, while Tele leapt a PR of 14.95m in the triple jump, improving his previous IC4A mark. Vaughn ran in the fastest seeded heat of the day in the 400m, as the top four overall finishers all came out of Heat 8, placing fourth in the heat and overall with an IC4A time of 47.81. In the 5,000m, Michael Conway finished in sixth place with a PR of 14:30.30.
The Patriots return to action next weekend, traveling to three separate meets.
