FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason bats stayed hot in game two
of its doubleheader with Old Dominion as the Patriots claimed the weekend
series with a 16-6 triumph on Saturday afternoon in game two of a doubleheader at Spuhler Field.
Mason finished the game with 17 hits as all nine starters
registered at least one hit, RBI and run scored, improving the Patriots to
27-15 overall and 13-8 in the CAA. The Patriots batted around in both the
second and third innings, and the eight runs scored in the second tied a
season-high.
With the loss, ODU dropped to 15-25 and 5-13 in the
conference.
ODU jumped out quickly in the first inning, bringing in four
runs on five hits to go up, 4-0.
Mason broke open the game in the bottom of the second inning,
tallying eight runs to assume a lead it held on to the rest of the way. With
one out and runners on second and third the Patriots put their next eight
batters on base safely, allowing the eight runs to score. Sophomore outfielder
Josh Leemhuis started the run with a two-RBI single to left center, senior
catcher Jake Leonardo then singled, junior second baseman Chris Cook lined a
two-RBI single up the middle, junior outfielder Nick Allen doubled to left to
bring in a run, senior third baseman Brig Tison drilled an RBI single through
the right side, senior outfielder Dan Schafferman reached on a hit by pitch
senior designated hitter singled through the left side to score a run and
sophomore third baseman Blaise Fernandez singled up the middle to score a run
before ODU starter Huyett was replaced by McCarthy, who got sophomore first
baseman Mick Foley to pop out to end the streak and the Mason offensive
onslaught and leave the score at 8-4.
The Monarchs added a run in the top of the third to cut
their deficit to 8-5, but the Patriot bats weren't done, as they tacked on five
more runs to assume a commanding 13-5 lead. Cook and Allen both walked and
advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Tison. After an ODU pitching change,
Schafferman drilled a two-RBI single to left, Helgeson walked, Fernandez drove
in his second run of the game with a single to right, Foley pierced an RBI
single to right center and Leonardo singled to left for the final Mason run of
the inning.
ODU received an RBI double in the seventh inning to bring
the score to 13-6, and the Patriots tallied three more runs in the bottom of
the eighth off of a two-RBI double from Tison and a RBI groundout by
Schafferman for the final 16-3 margin.
Tison led the Mason offense, going 3-for-5 with three RBI's and
one run scored, while Fernandez finished 4-for-6 with two RBI's and two runs
scored.
Starter A.J. Johnson earned his fifth-consecutive win after
working six innings and giving up five runs on 10 hits. Sean Cabrera (1.0IP,
2H, 1R, 2K), Branden Bartlett (1.0 IP) and Chris O'Grady (1.0 IP, 2K) each
worked a inning of relief to close the game for the Patriots.
Designated hitter Joey Burney led ODU with a 3-for-4 showing
at the plate with two RBI's.
Huyett took the loss, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on
eight hits in just 1.1 innings of work. The Monarchs used four different
pitchers down the stretch to finish the game.
The Patriots will take to the road on Tuesday, traveling to
Georgetown for a 7:00 pm affair.
