The Patriots continue CAA play with a weekend series against
William & Mary. The games, originally scheduled to be a Friday-Sunday
series, have been changed due to the threat of inclement weather. The two teams
will now play a doubleheader starting at noon on Friday, while Saturday's 2:00
pm contest remains unchanged.
The Tribe has
won the previous four meetings between the two teams dating back to the 2009
season. They did not meet during the 2010 campaign.
The
matchup this weekend features two of the best pitching staffs in the CAA.
W&M leads the conference with a staff 2.17 ERA while limiting opponents to
a .221 batting average. Meanwhile, the Patriots stand fourth with a 4.10 team
ERA and a conference-best 167 strikeouts.
This season
Mason is led by senior third baseman Brig Tison. Going into the weekend he is
best on the team in batting average (.424, 5th CAA), on-base
percentage (.481, 6th CAA), runs scored (22, 4th CAA),
hits (39, 1st CAA) and stolen bases (10, 4th CAA). Senior
designated hitter Zack Helgeson leads the conference with nine home runs and a
.750 slugging percentage and a second-best 23 RBI's, while senior outfielder
Dan Schafferman is second in the CAA with 23 RBI's, third with 31 hits and
ninth with a .541 slugging percentage.
Two
of Mason's weekend starters on the mound also rank high in the conference, as
Anthony Montefusco stands second with 35 strikeouts and sixth with a 2.27 ERA,
while Ryan Pfaeffle is eighth with a 2.45 ERA. Closer Chris O'Grady has a CAA
second-best five saves on the season, and Jake Kalish ranks right behind him
with three saves.
W&M Friday starter RHP Matt Davenport is the reigning CAA
Pitcher of the Week. He tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout in a 5-0
victory at JMU last Friday in earning the honor. Currently he is second in the
conference in both ERA (1.03) and opponent batting average (.158) and third
with 32 strikeouts.
Sophomore Ryan Lindemuth paces the W&M offense, hitting .337
with 29 hits (5th CAA), 19 RBI's (6th CAA), eight
doubles, three home runs, nine HBP and 11 stolen bases (2nd CAA).
