Newark, Del. - The George Mason men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Delaware Invitational on Saturday morning and both teams came away with a second-place finish as Delaware won the men's race and Towson won the women's race. The men ran an eight-kilometer race while the women ran a five-kilometer race.
Mason sophomore Laura Sinclair won the women's race, nearly 40 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Katie Ogden of Towson. Ogden and Sinclair were the only runners to average sub-six-minute miles. Sinclair finished in 17 minutes, 40.83 seconds with Ogden at 18:18.50. Sinclair's time was a new course record, topping the old mark of 17:51.53 set by Millersville's Priscilla Jennings last season.
Sandy Castro was fifth with a time of 18:53.13, Victoria Samyn was 12th with a time of 19:38.73, Samantha Fickel was 15th in 19:57.37 and Kailyn Lockie was 16th in 20:04.05. Also finishing in the top 20 for Mason was Jennifer Spencer who recorded a time of 20:16.43.
Towson won the race with 27 point while Mason had 49 and Delaware had 50. Seton Hall was fourth with 115 points.
"I thought the team did a good job today," said Assistant Head Coach, Sita Ewell. "Laura had a great day with her first place finish and breaking the course record. Having six girls in the top twenty was a solid performance for the team, considering we are still in the early part of our season. We still have a lot of hard work in front of us, but we are on track for a successful season.
The men finished with 34 points, just behind Delaware, which had 28 points. Mason's top runner was Alex Zyryanov, who finished second individually with a time of 25:41.55. The men's team had 10 top 20 finishers and 4 out of the top 10. Robert Reynolds ran the race in a time of 26:03.94, which was good for fourth overall. Michael Conway came in sixth with a time of 26:04.66 and Anthony LaMastro finished tenth, running the race in 26:32.63. Other Mason top 20 runners were Andrew Pitts (12th), Mike Pachella (14th), Rob Krause (15th), Daniel Callan (16th), Andrew McGreal (19), and Josh Schlickenmeyer (20th).
"Overall, the meet was a solid opener for this group of guys," said Mason head coach Andrew Gerard, in reference to the performance of the men's team. "We rested most of the guys that raced last week and still have another guy or two that will open up a bit later. This wave did a nice job. Alex did an excellent job, but got a little impatient in the middle. It was definitely good to see Robert bounce back from last week to showcase the very good summer he had. Beyond that, Michael Conway also was very impressive in his first collegiate race. My hat is off to Delaware though. They always run tough at home and really did a nice job today."
George Mason's men's and women's cross country teams will race again on October 2nd when they host the Mason Invitational at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 2.
