FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's and men's swimming and diving teams competed in their first home event of the season on Friday afternoon at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax, Va.
The Patriots' women's team won 10 of 16 events and defeated Old Dominion, 159-103. The men's team won nine of 16 events and downed the Monarchs, 152-110
On the women's side, the Patriots took the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle with senior
Peyton Brehmer first (23.84), junior
Hannah Magdeburg second (24.75) and sophomore
Carly Bates third (24.77). Brehmer also won the 100-yard butterfly (57.25) with freshmen
Madelyn Abel third (59.49) and
Madeline Majewski fourth (1:00.77).
Junior
Megan Anderson won the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.87) with classmate
Sarah Dichak fourth (2:14.62).
Abel notched a pair of wins on the day. She claimed the 100-yard freestyle (53.53) to propel the Patriots to a one-two-three finish in the event. Senior
Angelina Zeidan was second (53.81) and Magdeburg placed third in the event (54.09). Zeidan also recorded a first-place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:10.88).
In the 200-yard freestyle, Abel took first (1:55.66) with junior
Casey Tingen right behind in second (1:57.77).
The Patriots went one-two in the 200-yard breaststroke with senior
Ainsley Toews first (2:24.31) and junior
Kristen Ivey second (2:27.11). Toews also took third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.61).
The Patriots had a strong day in the distance events. Sophomore
Greta Mott won the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.51) with Dichak second (5:13.89) and freshman Lexie Brazier third (5:15.47). In the 1000-yard freestyle, freshman Lexie Brazier placed second (10:47.67) and Ivey was third (10:49.48).
Freshman
Sidney Kaufman finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (58.90) while Mott was less than a second back in third (59.08).
George Mason swept the relay events. In the 200-yard medley relay, Mott, Toews, Brehmer and Tingen teamed up to take the top spot (1:46.89). In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the combination of Brehmer, Abel, Magdeburg and Tingen outpaced the field (1:36.73).
On the men's side, senior
Tate Anderson won the 200-yard freestyle (1:36.94) with junior
Cody Scifres placing fourth in the event (1:43.44). Anderson also took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle (20.73) with junior
Agustin Rasche third (21.43) and classmate
Colby Lane fourth (21.57).
In the 100-yard freestyle, Anderson was second (45.05) and Rasche third (47.01).
In the 100-yard backstroke, junior
Ian Rodgers took first (49.12) while senior
Jett Lee was third (52.34). In the 200-yard backstroke, Rodgers finished first (1:49.89), Lee third (1:55.79) and sophomore
Anthony Garono fourth (1:57.44).
Sophomore
Ryan Serbia posted a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.34) with senior
Jack Chapman third (59.10). Serbia finished second in both the 200-yard breaststroke (2:03.70) and 200-yard IM (1:56.16).
The Patriots claimed the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly with senior
Aoun Al-Hiari first (1:54.30), freshman
Brendan Lao second (1:56.44) and junior
Colin Murtaugh third (1:56.59). George Mason took three of the top four spots in the 100-yard butterfly, with Al-Hiari second (48.79), Murtaugh third (51.36) and sophomore Gabe Miller fourth (51.83).
In the distance events, junior
Alex Crown won the 1000-yard freestyle (9:43.97) and placed third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.26).
The Patriots swept the relay events. In the 200-yard medley relay, Rodgers, Serbia, Al-Hiari and Rasche touched the wall first (1:30.41). The team of Anderson, Rodgers, Rasche and Lane combined to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in the final event of the afternoon (1:22.70).
The Patriots are back in action at the Richmond Duals Oct. 17-18 at the Hampton Aquaplex in Hampton, Va.
