BLACKSBURG, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped its midweek game at Virginia Tech, 24-5, on Tuesday night at English Field in Blacksburg, Va.
Mason (17-21, 5-7 A10) took the lead against Virginia Tech (26-12, 12-9 ACC) freshman starter Madden Clement in the top of the first.
With two outs, senior center fielder
Jordan Smith singled to the pitcher and graduate student left fielder
Ben Jones belted his third home run of the season, a blast over the left field fence to put the Patriots in front, 2-0.
In the bottom of the first, Virginia Tech sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on nine hits to take a 9-2 lead.
The Hokies scored seven runs against Mason freshman starter
Dylan McCarthy, including three straight home runs. Virginia Tech added a pair of runs later in the inning on a two-run single.
In the top of the third, graduate student second baseman
South Trimble was hit by a pitch. Junior shortstop
Carsen Pracht then ripped his ninth double of the season to right-center, with Trimble racing around to score.
Pracht then stole third and scored on a passed ball to cut the Hokies lead to 9-4.
The Hokies scored four runs in the home half of the third to increase the advantage to 13-4. Junior third baseman Carson DeMartini hit his second two-run home run of the game in the inning.
Virginia Tech added four runs in the fifth and sixth and three in the seventh to make the scored 24-4. The Hokies hit five home runs in the game.
Mason scored the final run of the game in the top of the ninth. Junior first baseman

Jake Butler followed with a double. Graduate student designated hitter
Socrates Bardatsos plated Woody with a single through the right side.
The Patriots used eight pitchers and the Hokies used seven pitchers in the game.
Bulter went 3-for-4, Jones was 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and Pracht and Bardatsos each drove in a run.
The Patriots return home for a three-game Atlantic 10 series against VCU beginning Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
