Patriots Face Atlantic 10 Opponents at Richmond Duals

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING at Richmond Duals

TEAMS PARTICIPATING: Davidson, Duquesne, George Mason, Richmond
FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving teams will face Atlantic 10 opponents for the first time this season, competing against Davidson, Duquesne and Richmond at the Richmond Duals on Friday and Saturday.
 
The events will take place at the Hampton Virginia Aquaplex in Hampton, Va.
 
The Mason women's team will face Duquesne on Friday and then take on either Davidson or Richmond on Saturday.  On the men's side, Mason and Davidson will compete in a single dual meet over both days.
 
Last season at the Richmond Duals, the George Mason men's team won its two-day dual against Davidson, 214-190.  The Patriots' women's team defeated Duquesne on day one, 152-147 and fell to Richmond, 177-122, on day two.
   
In their victory over the Dukes, the women's team won eight events, with junior Abigail Murtaugh winning both butterfly events for the second straight year at the event.  She touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly (57.54) and 200-yard butterfly (2:06.03).
 
Anka Whelan took the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke (57.41) for the second straight year at the event.  Ali Tyler took first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.16), Kristen Ivey claimed the 1650-yard freestyle (17.39.58), Peyton Brehmer and touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.33). 

The Patriots also won both relay events with the team of Emma DeJong, Shannon Judge, Whelan and Brehmer winning the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.50) and the group of Tyler, DeJong, Judge and Brehmer taking the top spot in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:32.59). 
 
In the three-meter diving event, junior Emma McDonald placed second (229.30 points).
 
The Patriots' women's team also won six events in its dual against Richmond.  Tyler won both the 50-yard freestyle (23.93) and 100-yard freestyle (53.06), DeJong swam to a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.48), Murtaugh won the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.78) and 100-yard butterfly (57.79) and Kristen Ivey touched the wall first (2:29.21). 

In the diving events, McDonald placed second in the one-meter (197.45 points) and fourth in the three-meter (190.85).
 
The men's team won eight events on day two against Davidson.

Ian Rodgers took the top spot in the 50-yard backstroke (23.59), Tate Anderson touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly (50.11), Zane Roberts claimed the 100-yard breaststroke (58.39), Tyler Lentine won the 50-yard breaststroke (26.70) and Alex Crown took first place in the 400-yard IM (4:06.27).
 
On day one last year, the Patriots won six events against Davidson.
 
Rodgers took the top spot in three individual events, including the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.41) and 200-yard backstroke (1:49.88).
 
Anderson finished first in the 200-yard IM (1:53.34), Roberts won both the 50-yard freestyle (21.12) and 100-yard freestyle (46.01).  Lentine touched the wall first for the second straight year in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.23).   
 
ABOUT THE PATRIOTS
 
The Mason men's team has 19 returners and five newcomers on the roster under head coach Jamie Greenwood.
 
The Patriots' men's team begins the season with one graduate student, three seniors, eight juniors and 10 sophomores and two freshmen.
 
Returning for the Patriots are seniors Tyler Lentine (Great Falls, Va.), Zane Roberts (Chesapeake, Va.) and Logan Skiles (Mechanicsburg, Va.)
 
Mason has eight juniors with Aoun Al-Hiari (Alexandria, Va.), Tate Anderson (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.), Michael Bock (Apex, N.C.), Jack Chapman (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Max Fermayer (Weston, Fla.), Jett Lee (Centreville, Va.), Matt Quackenbush (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Sam Rivas (Richmond, Va.).
 
The Patriots return eight sophomores with Christian Anderson (Fairfax, Va.), Alex Crown (Gainesville, Va.), Jack Graham (Williamsburg, Va.), Ian Jones (Fredericksburg, Va.), Colby Lane (Fairfax, Va.) Colin Murtaugh (Roanoke, Va.) Ian Rodgers (Newport News, Va.) and Cody Scifres (Colorado Springs, Col.)
 
Mason added graduate student Kyle Johnson (Sterling, Va.), sophomores Anthony Garono (Crozet, Va.) and Ryan Serbia (Edmond, Okla.) along with freshmen Lucas Eminger (Milford, Ohio) and Gabriel Miller (Columbus, Ohio).
 
The Mason women's team has 26 returners and five newcomers on the roster.
 
The Patriots' women's team begins the campaign with one graduate student, nine seniors, six juniors and 10 sophomores.  They will be joined by five freshmen for the 2024-25 season.
 
The Patriots are led by graduate student Abigail Murtaugh (Roanoke, Va.) and nine seniors, Sydney Atkins (Huntingtown, Md.), Emma Burke (Pearland, Texas), Emma DeJong (Winchester, Va.), Shannon Judge (Marlboro, Md.), Emma McDonald (Cabin John, Md.), Calli McEvoy (Henrico, Va.), Kylie Thompson (Richmond, Va.), Ali Tyler (Cheshire, Conn.) and Anka Whelan (Stafford, Va.)
 
George Mason has six juniors, Peyton Brehmer (Boerne, Texas), Maddie Hersh (McLean, Va.), Gracie Sweeney (Old Saybrook, Conn.), Ainsley Toews (Tifton, Ga.), Ally Yeary (Abingdon, Va.) and Angelina Zeidan (Cloverdale, Va.).
 
The Patriots return 10 sophomores with Megan Anderson (Blacksburg, Va.), Delainey Brandt (San Mateo, Calif.), Alayna Brooker (Aurora, Ohio), Sarah Dichak (Charlotte, N.C.), Lauren Hargnett (Raleigh, N.C.), Kristen Ivey (Greenville, N.C.), Hannah Magdeburg (Pottsville, Pa.), Regan Mooney (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), Clare Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Casey Tingen (Yorktown, Va.)
 
The Mason women's team added five freshmen with Carly Bates (Virginia Beach, Va.), Alexis Christensen (Southwest Ranches, Fla.), Greta Mott (Pittsburgh, Pa.) Adelline Oliveira (Muskegon, Mich.) and Leah Pereira (Franklin, Wis.) in their first year with the Patriots.
 
THE PATRIOTS SCHEDULE
 
The George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving teams will compete in six events during the 2024-25 campaign, with two events at home including the annual Patriot Invitational at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
 
The Patriots opened the season at the Potomac Relay Invitational (Sept. 27), hosted by American University at the Reeves Aquatic Center in Washington, D.C.  Facing teams from American, Georgetown, Howard, Mary Washington and Mount St. Mary's, the Patriots' men's team took first and the women's team tied for first.  The men's and women's teams had the top combined team score in the event with 646 points..
 
George Mason will face Atlantic 10 Conference opponents for the first time at the Richmond Duals (Oct. 11-12) held at the Hampton Aquaplex in Hampton, Va.  The George Mason men's team will face Davidson in a two-day dual, while the women's team will take on Richmond and Duquesne in the two-day meet.
 
The Patriots will travel again to face Navy, Louisiana State and Loyola-Maryland (Oct. 18) in Annapolis, Md.
 
George Mason hosts the annual Patriot Invitational (Nov. 21-23) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
 
The Patriots are back on the road against Duquesne and Cleveland State (Jan. 18) in Pittsburgh, Pa. and will conclude the regular season with a home dual against Towson (Jan. 25).
 
The Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships will be held Feb. 19-22 at the Hampton Aquaplex in Hampton, Va.
