RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team (0-10-0, 0-2-0 A-10) will travel down to Richmond, as they will face off against the Spiders (2-5-3, 0-2-0 A-10) at President's Field on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 4:30 p.m. Both teams will be looking for their first conference win of the season.
LAST TIME OUT
Last Sunday, the Patriots hosted Virginia Commonwealth in their A-10 home opener. Despite an early Ram goal, the Patriots settled in and kept the score at 1-0 going into halftime. However, VCU erupted for four goals in the second half and
the Patriots fell to the Rams 5-0.
SCOUTING RICHMOND
Every Richmond game has been decided by either one goal or by a scoreless draw. The Spiders went 2-3-3 in their non-conference schedule, starting the first two games season unbeaten with a 1-0 win at Longwood and a 0-0 draw against Nevada. They lost their next two matches to William & Mary and Old Dominion, both by the score of 1-0. Richmond then recorded back-to-back scoreless draws to Radford and Delaware. They secured a 2-1 win over American before ultimately losing to Charlotte 3-2 to close out their non-conference schedule.
In the A-10, the Spiders lost their conference opener to cross-town rival VCU 1-0. Most recently, they were edged out by Saint Joseph's 3-2 at home.
Graduate student forward Molly Wierman leads the team in points (8) with three goals and two assists. She scored her first goal of the season in their season opener at Longwood (Aug. 17) She then scored back-to-back goals against American (Sept. 7) and Charlotte (Sept. 10), their final two games of the non-conference schedule. She recorded her two assists in Richmond's most recent game against Saint Joseph's (Sept. 17). Wierman is currently sixth in the Atlantic 10 in shots on goal with 12.
Graduate student Caitlin Sutton is tied for the team lead with assists as well. She recorded her two assists during their match against American.
Four other Spiders have one goal this season. Senior midfielder Hannah Antonick scored her goal against Charlotte and junior defender Sofia Mancino scored her goal against American, while both sophomore midfielder Emma Shields and senior defender Casey Merz scored their goals against Saint Joseph's. Both Antonick and Shields also have one assist on the season.
Senior Taylor Montague has seen the most action in goal for Richmond, having started nine of Richmond's 10 games so far. In the A-10, the Durham, N.C., native is tied for first in shutouts (4), second in save percentage (.851), fourth in goals against average (.875) and ninth in saves per game (4.44).
HISTORY WITH THE SPIDERS
Mason has matched up with Richmond a total of 15 times, with the first game dating back to the Patriots' inaugural season on October 16, 1982, when the Patriots won 3-0. Mason holds a firm lead in head-to-head matchups against Richmond with a 10-3-2 record.
The last time these two teams met was the last season, when the Spiders edged out the Patriots in a 2-1 match in Fairfax on Oct. 9, 2022.
