Rayle, Bozek, Bechtel & Taormina Earn A-10 Conference Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 announced this year's all-conference winners this morning, and four George Mason Patriots were selected across three categories. Aly Rayle was named Pitcher of the Year. Rayle, Marlaina Bozek and Nicole Bechtel were named First Team All-Conference and Haley Taormina was named Second Team All-Conference.

In program history, Mason now has two Pitcher of the Year awards, seven First Team All-Conference awards and 11 Second Team All-Conference awards.

ATLANTIC 10 PITCHER OF THE YEAR & FIRST TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE: ALY RAYLE

Graduate student Aly Rayle (15-8, 2.20 ERA, 1 SV) etched her name into the Mason Softball record books. The five-time A-10 Pitcher of the Week and NFCA National Pitcher of the Week awardee set the all-time single-season strikeouts record (203) and became the only Patriot pitcher to have struck out 200 batters in a single season. She is tied with Lisa Davis with having pitched the most no-hitters tossed in one season (3), a record that has been standing alone since 2000. The Herndon, Va., native is also fourth all-time in single-season wins (15). In her one year with the Patriots, Rayle has set records on the career numbers side. She is tied for first in no-hitters pitched (3) alongside Lisa Davis (1997-00) and Marsha Boyd (1990-93), who both took four years to reach the same goal. Finally, her 2.20 ERA puts her tied for seventh all-time with Shannon Hiltner (1997-99).

Within the A-10 Conference this season, Aly Rayle led in strikeouts and strikeouts looking (59). She was second in the conference in wins and opposing batting average (.201) and was third & fourth in ERA and innings pitched (169), respectively.

This is Mason's first Pitcher of the Year and First Team-All Conference Pitcher winner since Marina Vitalich's 2017 season.

ATLANTIC 10 FIRST TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE, SECOND BASE: MARLAINA BOZEK

Junior infielder baseman Marlaina Bozek (.346 / .431 / .488) led the team defensively, committing only one error and having a .991 fielding percentage in her 41 games at second base. She was also a top-five offensive contributor for the Patriots. On the team, the leadoff hitter from Washington, Pa., was first in sacrifice flies (4), second in triples (3), walks (21) and on-base percentage (.431), third in runs scored (27), and fourth in at-bats (127), OPS (.919), batting average (.346), hits (44), doubles (9) OPS (.919) and total bases (62).

In the Atlantic 10, Bozek was a top-ten finisher in sacrifice flies (2nd), fielding percentage (6th) triples (7th),  batting average (8th), on-base percentage (9th), runs scored (9th) and walks(10th).

This is Marlaina Bozek's second conference award of her collegiate career. She was selected as an All-Conference Second Team member last season.

ATLANTIC 10 FIRST TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE, CATCHER: NICOLE BECHTEL

Redshirt junior catcher Nicole Bechtel's (.352 / .429 / .535) bat anchored the Patriot offense throughout the course of the season. Bechtel was a top-three offensive contributor. She led the team in batting average (.352) and was second in hits (50), doubles (13), RBI and total bases (76). The Harrisburg, Pa., product was named an A-10 Player of the Week as well as an NFCA National Player of the Week, where she slashed .857 / .917 / 1.857, reached safely in 11 of 12 at bats, and recorded eight RBI and two homers against Dayton. She also has the team's longest hitting streak this season (9).

In the Atlantic 10, Bechtel finished in the top 10 in doubles (T-2nd), RBI (3rd), hits (4th), OPS (8th), batting average (9th) and slugging percentage (10th).

This Nicole Bechtel's first end of the season award. She was also recently awarded Mason's Most Improved Player during this week's Green and Gold Celebration.

ATLANTIC 10 SECOND TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE, THIRD BASE: HALEY TAORMINA

Senior third baseman Haley Taormina (.350 / .417 / .611) saved her best season for her final season, leading the Patriot offense in at-bats (157), runs (39), hits (55), doubles (19), home runs (6), RBI, total bases (96) and slugging percentage (.611). The Chesapeake, Va., native was a two-time A-10 Player of the Week winner this season and jump started the Patriots to a strong start of the season. Her single season performance put her in the Mason record books in the top-five category in doubles (2nd), slugging percentage (3rd), runs scored (5th), and home runs (5th). In career numbers, Taormina is now fourth all-time in home runs (13) and eighth all-time in doubles (34).

Taormina also led the NCAA and A-10 in doubles hit. In the conference, she was a top-ten finisher in RBI (2nd), hits (3rd), runs scored (4th), slugging percentage (4th), sacrifice flies (5th), OPS (6th), home runs (6th), at-bats (6th) and batting average (10th).

This is  Haley Taormina's second end of the season conference award of her collegiate career. She was selected as an All-Conference Second Team member last season.
