PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The George Mason women's soccer team (1-13-0, 1-5-0 A-10) will head back up to Philadelphia and face La Salle (6-5-2, 4-1-0 A-10) this Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m at McCarthy Stadium. This will be the Patriots' penultimate road match of the season.
LAST TIME OUT
Last Wednesday, Mason faced Saint Joseph's in a rescheduled Wednesday afternoon match.
The Patriots lost to the Hawks 2-0.
SCOUTING LA SALLE
The Explorers finished their non-conference schedule 2-4-2, with their wins coming against Albany and Seton Hall. They lost to Towson, Delaware, Princeton and Bucknell and finished the non-conference schedule with back-to-back draws against NJIT and Temple.
In the A-10, however, La Salle is 4-1. After losing their conference opener to #24 Saint Louis 4-0, they are currently on a four-game winning streak, shutting out George Washington, Richmond, VCU and Saint Joseph's with a combined score of 8-0.
Out of the 15 teams in the A-10 standings, the Explorers are currently placed in 3
rd. The Patriots, on the other hand, are in 14
th.
Sophomore forward Justyce Hollenbach leads the team in goals with four. Hollenbach scored two goals against Temple on Sept. 10 and scored back-to-back goals against Richmond (Sept. 24) and VCU (Sept. 28).
Two other Explorer forwards have three goals this season. Junior Haley Gschrey, who is second in the conference in game-winning goals with two, scored goals against Albany, Delaware and George Washington, while sophomore Ricshya Walker scored two goals against Seton Hall (Aug. 31) and one against Saint Joseph's (Oct. 1). Walker leads the team and is sixth in the conference in shots with 32.
Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Estrada leads the team in assists with four. She tabbed one assist in the Towson (Aug. 17), Albany (Aug. 20), Seton Hall (Aug. 31) and George Washington (Sept. 21) games. Estrada is eighth in the conference in assists as well. Not far behind Estrada is senior midfielder/forward Castorina Giovanna, who has three assists. She was credited for one assist in the Towson, Temple and VCU games.
Junior Michela Auguadro has seen the most action for La Salle. The Cherry Hill, N.J., native has started 10 of 13 games and has appeared in 11 total. Auguadro recorded four shutouts, which is good for seventh-best in the conference. Elsewhere in the A-10, Auguadro is eighth in saves per game (4.09) and ninth in save percentage (.750).
HISTORY WITH THE EXPLORERS
Mason has matched up with La Salle ten times, with the first game dating back to October 21, 1989, when the Patriots won 8-0, the largest margin of victory between the two schools. The Patriots and Explorers would not meet again until
September 5, 2003, where the Patriots also won 3-2 in overtime.
It would be another 10 years until the Patriots and Explorers would meet more regularly. Since 2013, the Explorers have won five of the last eight matchups.
La Salle leads in head-to-head matchups with a 5-3-2 record.
The last time these two teams met was
Oct. 20, 2022, when the Patriots tied with the Explorers 1-1 at home. The last time Mason played at La Salle, however, was on
Oct. 18, 2018, when the Patriots won 1-0.
