GREENSBORO, NC ... Sophomore Amy Alecci scored in the second minute of overtime to give George Mason "sudden victory" with a 3-2 win over La Salle Friday in the first round of the UNCG/adidas Classic at UNC Greensboro Soccer Stadium.
George Mason improved to 2-0 as it won its first two games of the season for the first time since 1994. La Salle dropped to 0-2-1 with the loss.
La Salle got on the scoreboard first as Krista Lee scored off assists from Heather Barclay and Lisa Genna at 24:23, but the Patriots would tie the score at 37:24 as sophomore Amy Sorenson netted her second goal of the season off an assist by freshman Rachel Wiggins.
Mason took a 2-1 lead at 72:49 as junior Dianna Russini scored unassisted for her first career goal, but the Explorers would tie the game at 87:07 with Jessica Eisele converting off assists from Jackie Timmes and Courtney White to force overtime. Alecci's first goal of the season was unassisted at 92:00 to give the Patriots the victory.
Junior goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin had two saves for the Patriots, while Kerry Schamberger had seven saves for the Explorers.
George Mason will face host UNC Greensboro in the second round of the UNCG/adidas Classic Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
