Mason Travels to Dayton for Final Road Match of the Season

DAYTON, Ohio – The George Mason women's soccer team (1-14, 1-6 A-10) will travel to Ohio to face Dayton (9-1-5, 4-0-3 A-10) this Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m at Baujan Field. This will be the Patriots' final road match of the season.

LAST TIME OUT
Last Saturday, Mason traveled up to Philadelphia for the second time in four days to face La Salle. The Patriots lost to the Explorers 5-0

SCOUTING DAYTON
The Flyers finished their non-conference schedule 5-1-2, with their wins coming against Loyola Maryland (Aug. 17, 4-1), Cincinnati (Aug. 20, 4-1), Louisville (Aug. 24, 2-1), Akron (Aug. 31, 5-2) and Wright State (Sept. 3, 3-0). They suffered their only loss to IUPUI on Sept. 7, by the score of 1-0, and recorded ties to Big Ten schools Illinois (Aug. 27, 0-0) and Michigan State (Sept. 10, 2-2).

Since starting A-10 action, the Flyers have an unbeaten 4-0-3 record. Dayton started the A-10 season with a scoreless draw at St. Bonaventure (Sept. 14), followed by back-to-back shutout victories against UMass (Sept. 17) and Davidson (Sept. 21). They then recorded back-to-back ties to Saint Louis (Sept. 24, 1-1) and Fordham (Sept. 28, 0-0).

Dayton is currently on a two-game win streak after beating George Washington (Oct. 1, 4-1) and VCU (Oct. 8, 1-0).

Out of the 15 teams in the A-10 standings, the Flyers are currently placed in 3rd. The Patriots, on the other hand, are in 14th.
Dayton is second in the A-10 in goals scored with 30. Of their 11 registered goal scorers, three Flyers account for exactly half of their current goal total.

Midfielder Madison Wilson and forwards Noel Blain and Laney Huber share the team lead with five goals each. Sophomore forward Mairin Wessner is not far behind in goals scored for Dayton, as she has four this season. Four other Flyers have at least two goals on the season.

Dayton's high powered offense also leads the conference in total shots (246) and shots on goal (120).

Senior midfielder Diana Benigno leads both the team and conference in assists with six. Madison Wilson, who currently leads the team in points, is second on the team with four assists.

Dayton's defense has stifled opposing offenses all season, allowing only 10 goals this season, tied for second fewest allowed in the conference. In goal, they boast a conference-leading .877 save percentage.

Sophomore Batoul Reda has seen the most action for Dayton. The Dearborn, Mich., native has started 14 of 15 games and has recorded a conference-leading six shutouts. She also leads the A-10 in goals against average (.651) and save percentage (.878).
HISTORY WITH THE FLYERS
Mason has matched up with Dayton a total of ten times, with the first game dating back to October 23, 1988, when the Patriots won 1-0. Dayton leads the head-to-head matchups against Mason with a 7-3 record and have won the last three matchups. With two of those last three ending in Dayton shutouts, the Flyers have outscored the Patriots 11-1.

The last time these two teams met was last season  on Sept. 22, 2022, when the Flyers beat the Patriots 4-0 in Fairfax to open A-10 play.
 
This will be the first time since Oct. 3, 2021, that Mason will travel to Dayton. In that game, the Flyers beat the Patriots 5-1.


UP NEXT
The Patriots will return to Fairfax this weekend to begin their final home stand, as they will host rival George Washington on Sunday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. and can be watched on ESPN+.
