FAIRFAX, Va. – For the third time this season, the George Mason men's volleyball team (8-5, 3-1 EIVA) prevailed in conference play defeating NJIT in four sets of work (26-28, 25-21, 25-17, 27-25) on Friday night inside the Recreation Athletic Complex (RAC).
"Super proud of my boys tonight," head coach Jay Hosack said. "They followed the game plan and executed it to a T. I thought we ran a darn good offensive scheme against NJIT and it proved to be beneficial. We kept pressure on their passers by finding the right guy at the right times and we just stayed true to our defensive prowess and transitioned a bunch of balls tonight. That was a byproduct of just the hard work we put in all week."
Senior Sam Greenslade earned a season high 15 kills, coupled with seven digs, two solo blocks and a service ace. Sophomore Richie Hoff tallied 15 kills as well to go along with two service aces.
Senior Bryce Gatling produced on defense for the Patriots, notching two solo blocks of his own, helping the Patriots neutralize a hard-hitting Highlander offensive attack.
Mason did not get off to the start they were hoping for, trailing the first set for the majority of the game and ultimately falling 26-28. The Patriots didn't fold despite the setback, coming back to dominate the next two sets to earn a 2-1 set advantage.
In the fourth and final set, the Patriots got out to a early 10-6 lead only to see it disappear when the Highlanders went on a three-point run, tying the contest at 14 apiece. A well-timed time out from Hosack allowed his group to reset and regain the lead, 16-14. After a back-and-forth by both squads, a blocking effort from both Gatling and Hoff gave the Patriots their third conference win of the season.
