Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – The Atlantic 10 road opener was not kind to the George Mason women's lacrosse team.
The Patriots scored their fewest goals of the season in a 24-5 loss to Massachusetts on Friday at Garber Field. UMass, the defending Atlantic 10 regular season co-champ, led for nearly the entirety of the game and jumped out to a 14-3 lead at halftime.
Junior
Hailey Johnson scored twice to lead the Patriots (6-5, 2-1 A-10). Senior
Chachi Kelehan added a goal and an assist and junior
Julianna Brown and freshman
Deanna Balsama also scored. Sophomores
Erin Donoghue and
Abby Folker each collected four draw controls.
Mason committed 18 turnovers and recorded just 17 shots. The Minutewomen (8-3, 3-0), conversely, fired off 39 shots, including 30 on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Melissa Semkiw made five saves and allowed 18 goals for the Patriots. Senior
Elizabeth Benedetto came in and allowed six goals while making one stop.
Mason returns home to play St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m. on Sunday at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots will host their first Pride Game, with T-shirts available for fans (while supplies last).
