SCOUTING CANISIUS
The Golden Griffins are 0-4 to start the season but have faced a grueling slate against some of the nation's best. Canisius has fallen to No. 20 Notre Dame, No. 5 Northwestern and No. 6 and defending national champ James Madison (on Friday in Harrisonburg, Va.). The Golden Griffins' only loss against a non-ranked foe, Robert Morris, went to overtime on the road.
KELEHAN, BALSAMA EARN WEEKLY HONORS
Senior
Chachi Kelehan was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week on Monday and freshman
Deanna Balsama earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors for the second time. Kelehan, a native of Ellicott City, Md., scored her first four goals of the season and dished out three assists in a 16-9 victory over Longwood last Saturday. Balsama, an attacker from Sewell, N.J., scored a career-high three goals, won four ground balls and caused two turnovers against the Lancers.
LAST TIME OUT
The Patriots pulled away for a 13-10 victory over American on the road Wednesday in Washington D.C. Sophomore
Erin Donoghue scored a career-high six goals, along with scooping up six ground balls and causing three turnovers. Freshman
Deanna Balsama also tied career highs with three goals and three assists as Mason scored five straight goals in the second half to unknot a tie ballgame.
TEAM CAPTAINS
Seniors
Chachi Kelehan and
Rachel Woods were chosen as team captains before the season. Kelehan, an attacker from Ellicott City, Md., ranks third at Mason in all-time points (179), fourth in goals (127) and sixth in assists (52). Woods, a defender from Longmeadow, Mass., is a three-year starter who ranked third on the team last year with 14 caused turnovers.
SEASON PROSPECTUS
The Patriots return seven starters and 18 letterwinners from a 2018 team that went 11-7, finished fourth in the Atlantic 10 and reached the conference tournament for the fourth straight year. A-10 Rookie of the Year
Erin Donoghue returns after a breakthrough season in which she became the first Mason freshman to earn All-Conference First Team honors. The midfielder ranked second on the team in goals (44), points (51), draw controls (86) and ground balls (29).
