FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team has aspirations of winning an Atlantic 10 Championship.
In order to do so the Patriots will need to knock off A-10 powerhouse Massachusetts.
They'll get a chance Friday night on their home field.
Mason hosts nine-time defending conference champ UMass at 6 p.m. on Friday at George Mason Stadium in the Game of the Week. All Mason students with a valid student ID will receive a Mason light-up yo-yo.
The Minutewomen (9-3, 4-0 A-10) enter the matchup with the NCAA record for longest conference regular-season winning streak with 58 straight A-10 victories. They last lost an A-10 game on April 18, 2010.
They have won their last five games and eight of nine. Their only loss during that stretch was to No. 23 Cornell in double overtime on a neutral field. Redshirt senior Hannah Burnett leads the team with 39 goals and ranks third in the A-10.
The Patriots (9-3, 3-1) have won five of six. They are led by junior
Chachi Kelehan's team-high 30 goals. Graduate student
Corinne Wessels is tied for the most assists in the A-10 with 24 and ranks second in the conference with 52 points. Her 28 goals are second-most on the team.
UMass leads the all-time series 5-0. The Minutewomen rallied and then held off a charge from the Patriots in a 18-17 victory in Amherst last April.
