FAIRFAX, Va. – After a weekend scattered across the southeast, the George Mason men's and women's track and field teams will be together.
And the Patriots will be competing in a unique format.
Mason heads to the Dan Stimson Memorial Quad meet on Saturday at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. The meet features just four teams – Mason, Buffalo, Navy and William & Mary.
Double-dual meet scoring in a 5-3-2-1 point format will be utilized with a maximum of two athletes per team eligible to score. Relays will be scored on a 5-3 point scale. The matchups are: Mason vs. Navy, Mason vs. Buffalo, Mason vs. William & Mary, Navy vs. Buffalo, Navy vs. William & Mary and Buffalo vs. William & Mary.
"At a certain point, when the championship season rolls around, it is about scoring points," head coach
Andrew Gerard said. "Sometimes that involves setting a PR, if the situation demands it. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the races are more tactical or the conditions are not perfect. So you have to adapt and wrap your head around the fact you've got to beat the person next to you, not necessarily beat your best all-time (mark). So it is a little bit of a different mentality."
The Patriots, who spread out last week with meets at Miami, VCU and William & Mary, are expected to travel nearly their entire squad during just their second weekend of the outdoor season.
"With a diverse team like we have," Gerard said, "it is often to hard find an invitational that is going to challenge our sprinters, our distance runners, field eventers and be the right level of competition for all the different groups. A lot of teams focus on one event area. The fact that we have all the event areas with a good match of four teams – the other three and ourselves – it makes it a good, well-rounded competition where everybody can get something productive done this weekend, be challenged and be involved in a good, competitive situation. A little bit different flavor but I think it can serve a good purpose for us and a little bit different look that we always don't get."
