FAIRFAX, Va. – On Saturday, the George Mason women's lacrosse team will attempt to achieve something it hasn't accomplished in 16 years – win its first two games of the season.
The Patriots welcome Longwood at 2 p.m. on Saturday at George Mason Stadium for their home opener. Mason is coming off a 17-14 road victory over Monmouth in the season opener on Wednesday and will try to start 2-0 for the first time since 2002.
The Patriots, who have won 10 games or more in each of their last three seasons for the first time in program history, got off to a good start on Wednesday. They scored three goals in first three minutes against the Hawks, led the entire way and pushed the advantage to as many as six in the second half.
Junior
Chachi Kelehan led the way with a five-point day, scoring four goals and dishing out an assist. Graduate student
Corinne Wessels scored three goals and recorded an assist in her Mason debut, senior
Lindsey Tangeman also added a career-high three goals and an assist and senior
Kristin Morgan scored the first three goals of her career. Sophomore
Melissa Semkiw, an Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selection a year ago, made 14 saves.
Longwood (1-2) has lost two straight, including a 15-9 setback at William & Mary on Tuesday. The Lancers are led by senior Madison Stair, who has scored a team-high nine goals.
Mason leads the all-time series 4-1, with all five meetings coming in the last five years. The Patriots have won four straight against the Lancers, including picking up a 23-13 victory in Farmville last year.
