Towson, Md. – George Mason women's volleyball kicked off its tournament matches with losses to Eastern Michigan in three sets [25-21, 25-17, 25-15] and Towson in three sets [25-12, 25-17, 25-20].
"Today was a challenging day for our program. We faced two very physical teams that definitely took advantage of any mistakes we gave them," head coach
Aylene Ilkson said. "Our serve and pass game was definitely working in both matches, we just need our offense to come along with it. To our team's credit I think we definitely showed some grit at the end of the day which I hope carries over into tomorrow."
In the afternoon, the Patriots started hot out of the gates scoring the first four points anchored by a
Bailey Williams kill. Williams tallied three kills in the first set to go along with
Mikala Wells' four, and Mason finished the set getting six of the last eight points. However Eastern Michigan ultimately took the set 25-21.
Wells continued her productivity throughout the rest of the match tallying five kills in set two. She logged her 10
th and 11
th in the final set to give her 11 total, marking her fourth match of the season that she recorded double-digit kills. Mason however dropped the second and third sets 25-17 and 25-15 respectively.
In the night cap Towson won the match in straight sets. Williams and Wells continued to anchor the Mason attack posting eight and nine kills respectively. Both players eclipsed 70 kills on the season with Williams (74) and Wells (70) now averaging 2.96 and 2.69 kills per set respectively.
Mason finishes off its play in the Towson Invitational with a 12:15 matinee against Lafayette.
