FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's and women's cross country teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday.
The Patriots will compete in the IC4A/ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. The women begin at 11:15 a.m. on a 5K course, with the men to follow at 11:45 a.m. on an 8K course.
"We're physically prepared," Mason head coach
Andrew Gerard said. "It is going to be a matter of continuing to get our head straight and when we get to line be ready to compete. We kind of moved in that direction somewhat last weekend at regionals. But we want to continue that trend and finish on an upswing for sure."
Mason is just a week removed from the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships. The men finished 19th, with their top five runners just 23 seconds apart. The women placed 22nd for their highest finish in three years.
The IC4A/ECAC Championships will feature more than 30 teams on both sides. In years past, there have been two divisions – championship and university – for the men and the women. But this year all of the teams will compete in one race, thus having a similarly large field size of what the Patriots experienced at the NCAA Southeast Regional.
"They give trophies to the top six teams and we certainly would like to come home and be in that crew," Gerard said. "I think that is a reasonable goal. We would like to be contending certainly for a trophy and see where we are."
