FAIRFAX, Va. – The first of two 2017 women's volleyball Revolutionary Rivalry meetings took place Friday night at the RAC, and it was the Colonials defeating the Patriots in five sets. The Patriots took sets one and three and the Colonials took sets two, four and five. Senior outside hitter
Jordan Glass posted 13 kills to set a new single-match career high.
"In the first and third sets we were putting the pressure on George Washington," head coach Aylene Ilkson said. "We were really making them play the ball and that was what was working for us. As soon as we went away from that and started committing a lot of errors on our side of the net it put us at a huge disadvantage."
The Patriots had three players record double-digit kills for the first time this season. Those three were sophomore outside hitter
Bailey Williams (21), sophomore outside hitter
Mikala Wells (12) and Glass (13).
The Patriots came out in control in the first set, one they took 25-20. Williams led the way by posting seven kills, including two straight to give Mason its 24
th and 25
th point of the set. Freshman setter
Emily Konchan also recorded one of her two service aces in the first set, which would later tie a season high for her.
After dropping the second set 25-11, the Patriots rebounded in set number three thanks to five kills from Wells and Glass. Glass racked up her kills in the beginning of the set while Wells went to work late in the set, getting the Patriots the 25-21 victory with three straight kills to close out the set.
However, the Colonials were the ones who would mount a comeback and steal a victory. Despite Williams posting six kills in both the fourth and fifth set, GW came out victorious in both by scores of 25-19 and 15-12 respectively. The Patriots did show resiliency down 9-3 in the final frame to tie things at 12, but the Colonials prevailed.
A rare Saturday off follows Friday's match, so the next time the Patriots are back in action is Oct. 13 against Davidson at the RAC.
