At the end of the first day of competition at the Atlantic 10 outdoor track and field championships Mason holds second place in the women's competition and third in the men's.
The women's squad trails first place Dayton by just seven points and already claims two individual conference titles with Mandissa Marshall taking pole vault with a mark of 4.20m and Chantel Richardson claiming the women's long jump with a distance of 5.79m. Both athletes won the same title at the indoor championships in February.
In addition, Bethany Sachtleben finished on the podium in the women's 10,000m run with a second place time of 34:27.31. Amanda Denger finished second in the javelin with a personal record distance of 43.42m and Dominique Graham finished third in the high jump with a height of 1.65m.
The Patriots had several other women earn points with top 10 finishes on the day, with Lindsay Horton taking sixth in pole vault (3.40m) followed by Megann Kaiser in seventh (3.25m), Nhautrey Brown took seventh in the long jump (5.46m) and Meredith Oare also finished seventh in the hammer throw with a personal record mark of 46.77m. On the track, Jennifer Nakamura finished seventh in the women's 3000m steeplechase with a personal time of 10:52.18.
In addition, the women had 12 qualifiers for tomorrow's track finals. Shavon Briscoe qualified for Sunday's 100m hurdles setting a new A-10 record with a time of 13.40.
On the men's side, the Patriots had six athletes earn points with top 10 finished led by Byron Sintim's second place finish in the long just with a mark of 7.06m. Logan Besougloff finished fourth in the pole vault (4.35m) followed by Robert Yu in sixth (4.20m), Ryan Williams took eighth in the javelin with a personal record mark of 47.37m, Kirk Nguyen finished fifth in the hammer with a personal record distance of 51.08m and Michael Conway (34:27.97) and John Holt (30:38.73) took fifth and sixth respectively in the men's 10,000m run.
