ELON, N.C. - George Mason junior second baseman Chris Cook drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth as the George Mason baseball team recorded its first win of the season, 2-1, over Appalachian State on Friday evening at Latham Park.

Breaking a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth, sophomore first baseman Mick Foley led off the inning for Mason (1-0) with a single up the middle. Advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by redshirt senior catcher Jake Leonardo, Foley crossed home plate with Cook's single to left field off of ASU (0-1) relief pitcher Josh Wilson. Mountaineer left fielder Preston Troutman attempted the throw home but it came in high to give the Patriots the 2-1 lead.

The Patriots dented the scoreboard first in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Senior third baseman Brig Tison started the Mason half of the inning with a single up the middle and a stolen base, advancing to third as senior right fielder Dan Schafferman flied out to right. An interesting sequence of events drove in Tison, as ASU right fielder Tewell caught a fly ball from Fernandez in shallow right, but then dropped the ball on the transfer as he tried to throw home. Tison was held at third, but after the drop he was sent home, sliding across the plate to register the Mason run.

Appalachian State tied the game in the top of the sixth, using a single from designated hitter Daniel Kassouf to drive in the run and leave the scoreboard knotted at 1-1, but Cook's RBI in the eighth helped give Mason its first win of the season.

Cook finished the night 1-for-4 with an RBI for Mason, while Tison was 1-for-4 with a run scored and Foley went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Sophomore Jake Kalish earned the win in relief, pitching two scoreless innings with two strikeouts, while redshirt junior Chris O'Grady earned the save, throwing one inning with one hit while striking out two. Starting pitcher redshirt sophomore Anthony Montefusco pitched six innings while allowing six hits, one run (one earned), one walk and six strikeouts.

For the Mountaineers, Kassouf went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Will Callaway registered the only run while going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Wilson took the loss for ASU, throwing two innings and allowing two hits, one run (one earned) and two strikeouts. Starter Seth Grant pitched six innings, allowing three hits and one run (unearned) while striking out eight.

The Patriots return to action tomorrow, facing host Elon in a doubleheader starting at 10 am.
