Edinboro Bests the Patriots in MAC Wrestling Match

FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason took the early lead, but Edinboro responded with five straight wins to best the Patriots, 26-16, inside the RAC tonight.

The Patriots (5-4, 2-1) got off to a fast start with three straight decision. At 125, Ben Monn began the match with a 4-2 decision to get the Patriots on the board. Anthony Lucchiani with three takedowns in the match defeated the Fighting Scots Landon Bainey. In the 141 match, freshman Tate Hisey and Edinboro's Ryan Michaels battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation. In Sudden Victory, Hisey prevailed after a takedown. Patriots up 9-0.

Edinboro would manage to get bonus points in their first two wins. The Fighting Scots got on the board with a technical fall at 149 to cut the George Mason lead to 9-5.

DJ McGee earned his seventh major decision of the season with a 11-5 win over Garrett McChesney to claim four points and a Mason lead, 13-5. Unfortunately, that would be the final win of the match for GMU.

In only his third match this season, Drew Dickson fell short in one of the most competitive matches of the night. Dominating the first period with a takedown and near fall, but Ryan Burgos battled back in the second. Dickson would remain with a 11-10 edge throughout the third before Burgos earned a fall (6:59) as time expired.

At 174, Edinboro grabbed its first lead of the night, 14-13, edging #33 Logan Messer, 4-2.

The 184-pound match-up was one of nationally-ranked wrestlers. #31 Malachi DuVall and #16 Jared McGill needed sudden victory after a 3-3 tie. McGill earned a takedown and increased the lead to 17-13 with two bouts remaining.

Edinboro sealed the match with a 8-4 decision at 197 pounds, 20-13. A fall in the heavyweight bout finished the scoring at 26-13. With the win, Edinboro ties the all-time series at 6-6.

Schedule Change – Huge Weekend Next Week
The Patriots match, originally scheduled for this Sunday, has been moved to the following Sunday, Feb. 1 at Noon due to the expected snowstorm in Pennsylvania.

That makes next weekend a huge one. The Green & Gold take on Rider in the Johnson Center for our Alumni Night/Super Dual at 5 pm. There will be a rally towel giveaway, poster making, and an iPad giveaway.
