PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The George Mason baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader to Saint Joseph's, 9-4 and 10-4, on Saturday at Smithson Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
GAME ONE
The Patriots rallied from a three-run deficit to tie the game in the eighth but the Hawks scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to take game one of the doubleheader, 9-4.
Senior center fielder
Jordan Smith hit his eighth home run of the season and scored two runs. Junior shortstop
Carsen Pracht hit his second home run of the year.
Saint Joseph's (21-23, 9-10 A10) took the lead against George Mason (20-28, 6-13 A10) redshirt sophomore starter
Konner Eaton in the bottom of the second.
With two outs, Saint Joseph's senior right fielder Ryan Picollo and graduate student first baseman Luke Zimmerman both walked and scored on back-to-back RBI singles by senior designated hitter Max Hitman and senior center fielder Conlan Wall to put the Hawks in front, 2-0.
Eaton limited the damage with a flyout to end the inning with the bases loaded.
The Patriots got a run back in the top of the third against Hawks senior starter Domenic Picone when Pracht belted a solo home run over the left field fence, his second homer of the season, to make it a one-run game at 2-1.
In the bottom of the third, Hawks sophomore third baseman Owen Petrich led off with a single, senior catcher Justin Igoe walked and freshman second baseman Tim Dickinson reached on an error, with Petrich scoring to increase the lead to 3-1.
Wall then forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk to make it a 4-1 game. For the second straight inning, Saint Joseph's left the bases loaded.
Sophomore reliever
Owen Stewart entered the game in the fourth and tossed three scoreless innings.
George Mason cut into the lead in the top of sixth against Saint Joseph's junior reliever Matt McShane.
Patriots graduate student designated hitter
Ben Jones led off with a single and Smith followed with his eighth home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field to make it 4-3.
The Patriots made it a new game in the top of the eighth. With one out, Smith singled to the pitcher, stole second, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch with two outs to tie the score, 4-4.
In the bottom of the eighth, Saint Joseph's sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs on three hits and three walks against George Mason graduate student
Luke Goodyear and junior
Britt Yount for the 9-4 win.
For the Patriots, Eaton allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits in 3.0 innings. Stewart scattered two hits and struck out three in 3.0 scoreless innings. Goodyear (2-1) gave up two runs in 1.2 innings and took the loss. Yount surrendered three runs on three hits and retired one batter.
For the Hawks, Picone allowed one run on two hits in 5.0 innings. McShane (4-2) surrendered three runs on three hits in 3.0 innings and earned the win. Graduate student Colin Yablonski struck out three batters in the ninth.
Smith went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored, Pracht was 1-for-2 with a solo home run and Jones finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.
GAME TWO
Saint Joseph's (22-23, 10-10 A10) took the lead against George Mason (20-29, 6-14 A10) junior starter
Chad Gartland in the bottom of the first.
Wall and junior left fielder Ryan Cesarini both singled to start the inning to put runners on the corners. Sophomore shortstop Ryan Weingartner then drove in a run the first run of the game with a groundout and Petrich followed with a RBI-double to put the Hawks in front, 2-0. After moving to third on a groundout, Petrich raced home on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
The Patriots dented the scoreboard in the top of the fourth against Saint Joseph's sophomore starter Will McCausland.
Jones led off with a double to left field and Smith drew a walk. With one out, sophomore designated hitter
James Quinn-Irons cleared the bases with a double to the gap in right-center field to make it a one-run game, 3-2.
Saint Joseph's added a run in the home half of the fourth on a two-out, RBI-double by Wall and another in the bottom of the fifth on a leadoff home run by Weingartner to increase the lead to 5-2.
In the top of the sixth, senior right fielder
Derek Wood led off with a double to center field and Jones singled to put Patriots on the corners. Smith drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Quinn-Irons plated another with a single through the left side to make it a one-run game at 5-4.
In the bottom of the inning, Weingartner hit his second home run in as many innings with a two-out, two-run shot to left field to extend the Hawks advantage to 7-4.
Picollo drove in two runs with a double and Wall plated another with a fielder's choice groundout in the home half of the seventh to extend the lead to 10-4.
For the Patriots, Gartland (2-5) allowed seven runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings and took the loss. Sophomore
Connor Knox was charged with three runs on three hits in the seventh. Freshman
Shaun Okeeffe and senior
Kyle Menaker each pitched 1.0 hitless inning.
For the Hawks, McCausland (3-4) allowed four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings and earned the win. Junior Luke Gabrysh tossed 3.2 scoreless innings to pick up the save.
Quinn-Irons went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI and Jones was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Patriots and Hawks wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Smithson Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
