FAIRFAX, Va. – Senior
Ryan Peterson took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and tossed a complete-game masterpiece to lead the Patriots past Massachusetts, 9-1, in the series finale at Spuhler Field.
Peterson allowed just two hits, one single and a double, and faced four batters over the minimum to earn his second win of the season. It was his second complete game in a Patriots uniform.
Graduate student catcher
Socrates Bardatsos went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI in the game.
Mason (17-20, 5-7 A10) scored runs in each of the first four innings against UMass (14-21, 5-7 A10) redshirt freshman starter Robbie O'Connor.
With one out in the bottom of the first, junior shortstop
Carsen Pracht doubled down the right field line and senior center fielder
Jordan Smith followed with a single to center to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
In the home half of the second, sophomore designated hitter
James Quinn-Irons led off with a single, swiped second for his ninth stolen base of the season and moved to third on a groundout. Bardatsos then doubled to left, with Quinn-Irons coasting home to make it 2-0.
The Patriots sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the third and took advantage of three UMass errors to score four two-out runs.
Smith reached on a throwing error to start the inning and both graduate student left fielder
Ben Jones and Quinn-Irons were hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a fielder's choice force out at the plate and a strikeout, the Patriots plated four unearned runs.
Bardatsos drove in a pair of runs with a single through the left side, with Quinn-Irons and Jones scoring on the play, to double the lead to 4-0.
Senior right fielder
Derek Wood reached on a throwing error, with Bardatsos advancing to third and Dykstra scoring all the way from second to make it 5-0. Bardatsos would score on a throwing error to extend the advantage to 6-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Pracht reached on an error and moved to second on a groundout. Jones then ripped a single up the middle to make it a 7-0 game.
Peterson allowed just two baserunners through the first five innings before the Minutemen collected their first hit of the game with a leadoff single in the sixth.
The Minutemen scored their lone run of the day in the top of the seventh. Graduate student catcher Mike Gervasi led off with a double and scored on a groundout.
The Patriots added two more unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth against UMass graduate student Jacob Terwilliger
With one out, Pracht doubled to left-center for his second hit of the game. With two outs, Jones reached on a throwing error, with Pracht crossing the plate. Quinn-Irons knocked in the final run of the day with a single to right-center for the 9-1 final score.
For the Patriots, Peterson (2-1) scattered two hits and allowed just five baserunners in the complete-game victory. He recorded 11 groundouts, 10 fly outs, three pop outs and two foul outs.
For the Minutemen, O'Connor (1-5) allowed seven runs, two earned, on six hits in 4.0 innings and took the loss. Senior Zach Given pitched 3.0 hitless innings. Terwilliger gave up two unearned runs on two hits in the eighth.
Bardatsos went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored, Pracht was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and Quinn-Irons finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
The Patriots are on the road to face No. 23 Virginia Tech on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. at English Field in Blacksburg, Va.
