DAYTON, Ohio – Sophomore pitcher Ryan Edmonds earned his first collegiate win, while junior catcher Connor Dykstra and graduate student left fielder Ben Jones each homered to lead the Patriots past the Flyers, 8-6, on Sunday afternoon at Woerner Field in Dayton, Ohio.

Edmonds tossed four innings of one-hit ball in his third appearance of the season, Jones went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored, while Dykstra hit his third home run in as many games and sixth of the season.

Mason (16-17, 4-5 A10) senior starter Ryan Peterson retired the first six Dayton (22-13, 6-3 A10) batters of the game.  Flyers freshman starter Connor Fennell began the game with three scoreless innings.

In the bottom of the third, Dayton senior designated hitter Paxton Tomaini drove in a run with a double and freshman second baseman David Mendez knocked in two more with a double to put the Flyers in front, 3-0.

The Patriots dented the scoreboard in the top of the fourth.  Jones led off with a single and Dykstra belted a two-run home run over the left field fence to make it a one-run game at 3-2.

The Flyers loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning with a pair of walks and a single.  Tomaini plated a run when he grounded into a double play to increase the lead to 4-2.

In the top of the fifth, Wood started the inning with his first triple of the season and graduate student South Trimble quickly drove in Wood with a single to center to make the score 4-3.

Dayton scored its last runs of the day in the bottom of the fifth.  Junior third baseman Mason Dobie singled in a run and graduate student catcher Nolan Watson doubled in another to extend the lead to 6-3.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, sophomore third baseman Evan Blanchard doubled to right field and junior shortstop Carsen Pracht drove in a run with a single.

Mason added a run in the top of the seventh when Jones smashed a two-out home run to straightaway center field to once again make it a one-run game at 6-5.

The Patriots completed the comeback in the top of the eighth.  Junior first baseman Reece Woody and sophomore designated hitter James Quinn-Irons began the frame with back-to-back doubles to tie the game.

Blanchard was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second and Pracht dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move them into scoring position.  Quinn-Irons rumbled home on a wild pitch and Blanchard would score on a throwing error to give the Patriots their first lead of the game at 8-6.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Flyers brought the tying run to the plate twice.  Edmonds enticed a double play grounder with a runner on first after a hit by pitch and with a runner on second after a two-out double, graduate student left fielder Keagan Calero grounded out to end the game.

For the Patriots, Peterson allowed six runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings and Edmonds (1-0) tossed 4.0 scoreless innings and allowed only two baserunners to earn his first NCAA win.

For the Flyers, Fennell (3-2) allowed seven runs on 11 hits in 7.0 innings and took the loss.  Freshman Ayden Tran gave up a run and faced two batters in the eighth.  Senior Luke Baker pitched 1.2 hitless innings.

Eight players in the lineup had at least one hit for the Patriots.

Jones was 3-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored, Trimble was 2-for-5 with a run scored and Blanchard finished 1-for-2, reached base four times and scored two runs.

The Patriots are on the road to face Virginia on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.
