FAIRFAX, Va. – Junior catcher
Connor Dykstra hit his third home run of the season, but the Patriots fell to Villanova, 9-2, on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Mason threatened in the bottom of the first. Senior center fielder
Jordan Smith and Dykstra both singled and graduate student designated hitter
Ben Jones was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two out, but the Patriots were unable to push a run across.
Mason (11-12) took the lead against Villanova (7-14) graduate student starter Luke McCollough in the bottom of the third.
With one out, junior first baseman
Reece Woody drew a walk and Dykstra stepped to the plate and smashed a two-run home run over the right-center field fence to put the Patriots in front, 2-0.
Villanova took the lead in the top of the fourth against Mason senior starter
Ryan Peterson and junior reliever
Britt Yount.
The Wildcats sent eight batters to the plate and scored three runs on two hits, three walks and an error. Graduate student first baseman Dylan Dennis drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and sophomore designated hitter Collin Quintano plated a pair of runs with single through the left side to make the score 3-2.
Villanova scored the final nine runs of the game.
The Wildcats added two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run single by sophomore third baseman Michael Whooley to increase the lead to 5-2.
Villanova graduate student catcher Jason Neff hit a three-run home run in the sixth to and the Wildcats scored a run on a balk in the seventh for the 9-2 final score.
The Patriots used five pitchers in the game. Peterson (0-1) allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits in 3.1 innings and took the loss. Graduate student
Luke Goodyear pitched 2.0 hitless innings.
For the Wildcats, McCollough (2-1) allowed two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings to earn the win. Senior Patrick Montfort tossed 3.0 hitless frames and graduate student Stephen Turzai retired the side in order in the ninth.
Dykstra went 2-for-4 with his third home run of the season and Smith finished 2-for-4.
The Patriots wrap up their five-game homestand when they host VMI on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
